How to start job-hunting?
Many of you tell us that though you have a broad idea of what career you would like to go into, you are not sure about how to start looking for work. Here is how we can help:
It’s one of the most important choices you will ever make so ensure you are as informed and considered as possible. The University has a wealth of information to help you choose a career, from inside knowledge from professionals to programmes to help you think about the skills and abilities you have. As a start, check out potential career paths on Prospects. If you are not sure about your career path, a one-to-one guidance appointment with a Career Consultant may help clarify your thoughts.
Now you need to find out what opportunities are out there. Get the latest job opportunities through Engage, and come along to our employer fairs, and networking events to meet employers. When you see an opportunity that you are interested in, it’s time to make an application.
Find out what is required to apply for the specific role and prepare your application. Learn how to make your CV, covering letter or application stand out from the rest, and ensure that you clearly spell out to the employer how your skills and experience match with the key competencies required. If you’re sending out loads of applications and not hearing back, you may want to get your CV and application checked by a Career Consultant!
Seal the deal
At interview, employers want to know can you do the job, will you do the job, and will you fit in with the team. Read on to learn how to prepare, practise and research to impress at interviews. Don’t forget to practice for Assessment Centres using the psychometric tests on Engage Plus. You can book a mock interview with our team practice your interview skills, so you’ll be able to put your best foot forward.
