Take part in Mayor’s Entrepreneur 2020 Competition! It is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills and win £20k.
N.B. The following message from the Greater London Authority: “In light of the measures that have been implemented by the Government to try and contain the spread of Covid-19 we have decided to delay this year’s Mayor’s Entrepreneur final judging and awards event to the autumn. Due to the fact that most of the universities have decided to delay exams and suspend lectures we have decided to delay the application deadline to May 17th 2020 to give you all more time to work on your ideas. If you have already submitted your application you are able to work on it more and re-submit it at a later date. We are working closely with our training partners to develop some additional materials to help you develop your ideas further.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org”
Please note that some of the dates in the below information may no longer be accurate.
The main aims of the programme are:
💡 Delivering good growth for our city – growth that makes London cleaner, greener and ready for the future.
💡 Ensuring students get the skills they need to succeed in a fair, inclusive society and thriving economy.
The competition focus on engaging London’s students to find solutions that will improve their city.
The winner/s of each award get £20k to start up their business idea, as well as expert mentoring from staff at City Hall. In 2020 the competition will offer four £20k funds.
We are looking for smart business ideas to make London cleaner and greener focused on one of the four awards; Environment, Smart Cities, Creative Industries and Health.
The competition also aims to support you with developing your workplace skills. This includes taking part in volunteering opportunities, paid part-time internships at City Hall, mentoring opportunities, and a series of workshops on entrepreneurial and employability skills including problem solving and presentation skills.
How it works
1: Come up with a great idea
2: Submit your great idea – enter the competition via the competition entry page.
3: An expert panel of judges from each award will shortlist the 30 best ideas from each award to go through to the semi-final.
4: The semi-final -> The 120 semi-finalists will attend a boot camp style training session to get some additional training and tips on pitching. They will then have two minutes to pitch their ideas to the expert judges who will select the top five ideas to go through to the final.
5: The final – In May 2020 the 20 finalists will get to pitch their ideas in front of a panel of celebrity judges and a live audience at City Hall. This is when the four Mayor’s Entrepreneurs for 2020 will be chosen.
An expert panel chooses the 120 semi-finalists (30 from each award) who will attend a boot camp style workshop before presenting their idea to the expert panel in a 2-minute pitch before the panel select the top five entries from each category to form the 20 finalists.
The finalists then pitch Dragon’s Den style in front of a live audience and a panel of high-profile judges who pick the winners. Deborah Meaden, Dame Vivienne Westwood, Jo Malone MBE, Zac Goldsmith MP, Sir Terry Farrell, Dame Ellen MacArthur and Richard Reed have all acted as judges in previous years.
