Futures Together is a project that is currently running at TimeBank. It supports Muslim women to learn basic computer skills and get online.

This project offers women over 35 the chance to interact with younger generations and improve their English skills. The project takes place in London and has now been expanded to Birmingham with funding from The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust.

You will help someone to:

  • Learn how to use a computer
  • Send emails and use the internet
  • Improve your English speaking skills

Would you like to pass on your skills?

We need young Muslim women aged 18-34 to help us deliver these workshops. If you can use a computer, send emails, use the internet and are free for two hours a week, you could make a BIG difference to another woman’s life.

If you would like to volunteer your help, we will provide training and you’ll be supported by the Project Coordinator. You could even learn to lead similar training workshops of your own.

So if you’d like to get involved or know someone who would benefit from the project please email info@futurestogether.org.uk or telephone the Project Coordinator Shaida Riaz on 07514 530285.

The Challenge is looking for Programme Leaders to oversee our intensive summer programme, overseeing a group of sixty young people, working both residentially and in the local community in London, West Midlands or the North West, over a period of three or six weeks.

The Programme Leader is responsible for both the overall running of the programme, and managing a dozen staff, working on all three weeks of the programme: a residential week where the young people undertake outdoor activities, a second residential week where young people learn key skills such as enterprise and media and a community week where the young people plan voluntary projects in their local area.

This role is suitable for an exceptional people manager with significant experience of working with young people. This is an extremely fulfilling and demanding position which involves managing a team of twelve staff and overseeing the pastoral care and development of sixty sixteen-year-olds.

Programme Leaders work for three or six weeks with The Challenge between June and September and are paid £1900 for each three-week programme.

For further information and to apply, please go to www.the-challenge.org/jobs.

Volunteer in Bosnia!

Would you like to volunteer with young people in Bosnia, working through art to help bring people together, with all your costs covered?

Firefly International is looking for 3 volunteers based in the UK aged between 20 – 30 to volunteer with our partner organisation Svitac in Brcko, Bosnia from June 15th 2012 – August 31st 2012.

The volunteers will work on either Music or Arts and Crafts programmes with young people from a variety of backgrounds, living in North East Bosnia. All costs will be covered (travel, accommodation and basic living expenses) as part of the Youth In Action European Commission programme.

More details:
You will organise and develop music and drama workshops and activities alongside local staff and volunteers. You will also work alongside local staff and volunteers to organise various events, festivals and music and arts camps, which will be held both inside and outside Brcko.
All of these activities aim to encourage communication and dialogue at a local level, between people of a wide variety of backgrounds and ethnicities in Brcko, Bosnia, and to give people in Brcko the chance to meet and work with people from outside of Bosnia. Due to Brcko’s special status as an ‘inter-ethnic district’ within an increasingly divided Bosnia and Herzegovina these workshops are all the more needed. While focusing on common projects rather than divisive issues the EVS volunteering project aims to emphasise and develop a sense of belonging to a wider European community, and at the same time explore complex issues surrounding conflict, national identity and nationalism.

No previous international volunteering experience is required. For more information on this excellent opportunity please email us at evs2012@fireflyinternational.org before the 1st of May 2012.

Volunteer Reading Help (VRH) is a national charity which provides literacy support for children aged 6 -11 in areas of deprivation across England. We work through 16 local branches in the North, Midlands, Greater London and Kent.

VRH reading helpers receive comprehensive training, ongoing support and resources including books and games. Many VRH reading helpers go on to become part of the school community. Some reading helpers discover a vocation and decide they want to work with children. For everyone, it is an opportunity to give something back to society and to inspire the next generation of readers.

Each of the 1,700 fully trained reading helpers gives 3 hours a week for a school year to help children, one-to-one, with their reading. Currently we are helping 5000 children per year and we wish to reach many more. We hope to create a nation of confident children, literate for life and we need your help to achieve this.

Person specification:

  • Patient and encouraging
  • Good listeners
  • Able to work one-to-one with children at the child’s pace
  • Good communicators
  • Flexible and approachable
  • Passionate about literacy

If this sounds like you, please use the VRH branch finder to check how this operates in your area. For more information on application process please click here.
