Just 6 more days till the Bi-Annual Volunteering and Work Experience Fair.
A post by Lauren, project development officer at the African Child Trust.
ACT is a UK registered charity working in eight countries across Africa. Formed in 1998, our overall aim is to relieve poverty and advance developments by educating underprivileged children to enable them to achieve their potential in life. We are also empowering needy widows through training so that they can generate an income to support their families in a sustainable way. Our model of working in partnership with community based organisations in Africa over the past twenty years has resulted in successful project outcomes, and minimised the overhead costs of running the projects through the use of local volunteers.
We base our work around four core objectives, also referred to as SEED.
Sending skilled volunteers to support projects and activities in the community where they work.
Educating fatherless children and orphans to completion of secondary school and up to tertiary level where possible.
Empowering widows/ guardians via counselling, literacy and business skills training that will enable them to generate a sustainable income to support their families.
Developing the entire community where ACT works by providing technical and material support to local schools and health services.
