he University of Westminster’s Gospel Choir reached the finals in annual University Gospel Choir of the Year (UGCY) competition.

The finals took place last Saturday at Golders Green Hippodrome where University of Westminster Gospel Choir performed a combination of songs from artists such as Lawrence Flowers and Richard Smallwood and finished with a current uplifting melody from Israel Houghton.

The choir grew from the love for gospel music and now includes fifteen University of Westminster students from courses such as Commercial Music BA, Architecture BA, Television Production BA and Digital Media and Communications BA.

Charleen Afolabi, Director of the University of Westminster Gospel Choir, said: “Westminster Gospel Choir – group of young talents coming into one to minister the Word. Being a new choir we took a huge leap into the competition world but held strong as a team pulling together with the two things that unite us – our voices and our faith.

“Going by our scripture Philippians 2:13; it’s God that worked in us so that we may be able to do of His good pleasure. We do this through music, through our performance, through Christ.”

The UGCY is a voluntary organisation providing an unprecedented platform for University Gospel Choirs across the UK to develop and showcase their gospel musical abilities. It is an annual competition that aims to bring together talented and diverse individuals through music, encouraging them to strive for excellence and exceed their own limitations, whilst inspiring the young and old in all walks of life.
