Community rights – A changing picture?

Over the course of December 2011 to March 2012, the Urban Forum held a series of 12 events across England on community rights and neighbourhood planning. The aim was to engage community groups on this new policy agenda, and to increase the level of awareness and understanding of community rights. This paper outlines the opinions of around 200 participants at the events.

The Scottish Government has published a paper to underpin a public consultation process which will inform the future shape of policy and help the Scottish Government consider how our architecture and places can help provide a better quality of life and better position Scotland on the world stage. As a starting point for discussion, The paper considers 4 key themes around which the policy could contribute and asks a set of 12 related questions.

Smartfusion: Smart Urban Freight Solutions

Biodiversity indicators: 2012 assessment

The 2012 statistics on biodiversity indicators have been published by the today. The twenty-four indicators, in both the England and UK publications, provide an insight into the health of our natural environment. The indicators include the population status of key species, plant diversity, the status of priority species, habitats and ecosystems, protected sites, management of woodland agricultural land and fisheries, expenditure on biodiversity, and the amount of time given by volunteers to nature conservation activities.

Heathrow Garden City

Heathrow airport should be turned into a garden city if a new hub is built elsewhere, according to Graeme Bell, vice-president of the Town and Country Planning Association. He proposes turning Terminals 1, 2 and 3 into mixed-use commercial development, and suggests putting a retail park at Terminal 4 and building homes for 30,000 people across four so-called garden suburbs.
