Meeting the housing challenge: International examples

The Local Government Association (LGA) argues that English councils can learn a lot from international experience and innovation on meeting today’s housing challenges. Following a request from the LGA’s People and Places Board a collection of international housing examples from Europe and across the world has been compiled. Housing is a broad field so the research focused on five main themes to reflect the issues facing councils and the lobbying work of the LGA. The five themes are: raising finance to invest in affordable housing; land for building; building quickly; quality of building and quality of life; and making the best use of existing buildings.

Evaluating the impacts of Urban Regeneration Companies in Portugal: The case of Porto

Cities have undergone many changes since the 1950s, not least the expansion of urban areas to the detriment of the historic central areas, some of which have been left to decay. In Portugal the most visible results of this phenomenon are found in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto. To address this problem, the Portuguese Government conceived the first legal instrument for urban regeneration in 2004 which allows the local administrations to form publicly owned companies, urban regeneration companies (SRUs), to actively endorse urban regeneration in historic city centres. This paper, which appears in the journal Planning Practice & Research (Vol.29 Issue 5, October 2014), discusses the activities of the Porto Vivo SRU, one of these companies created in Porto, in the context of the Portuguese milieu of urban regeneration and evaluates Porto Vivo’s operation.

In a series of studies for the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, new evidence shows that cities will be central to global economic growth and climate action. Up to 2030, less than 500 cities worldwide are projected to contribute over 60% of global GDP growth. The studies by LSE Cities for the Global Commission include ‘Cities and the New Climate Economy: the Transformative Role of Global Urban Growth’ (NCE Cities Paper 01), ‘Steering Urban Growth: Governance, Policy and Finance’ (NCE Cities Paper 02) and ‘Accessibility in Cities: Transport and Urban Form’ (NCE Cities Paper 03). These studies form the basis of the cities chapter in the New Climate Economy Report ‘Better Growth, Better Climate’.

The theme of this symposium was bikable and walkable cities. Discussion centred on new planning approaches like sustainable cities, smart cities, transit oriented development, and governance of livable cities. Experts invited from all over the world shared experiences on bikeability as a transportation mode and walkability while considering the roles of transit oriented development, human oriented transport, accessibility, public space use, innovative solutions, economic and sustainable approaches in sustainable transport, policies encouraging sustainable transport and participation.
