The Farrell Review of Architecture and the Built Environment

The Farrell Review, an industry-wide review of architecture and the built environment, led by Sir Terry Farrell and commissioned by Culture Minister Ed Vaizey, has been published. After a wide-reaching consultation process including workshops throughout the country, the findings have been compiled into a report with 60 recommendations. There are four key themes (Education, outreach and skills; Design quality; Cultural heritage; Economic benefits) which were set out in the terms of reference for the Review, with an additional theme of built environment policy which addresses the legacy and proposed way forward.

Architecture magazine eVolo takes readers into the future with its annual skyscraper competition, which rewards innovative ideas for vertical living. For its ninth annual competition, the magazine received 525 projects from 43 countries on all continents. Three winners and 20 honorable mentions were selected by a jury of leaders in the fields of architecture and design.

SKYLINE is an exploratory research project that combines collaborative and comparative approaches to investigate the political, economic and social dimensions of an increasingly contested urban landscape: the skyline. The project aims at filing the existing lack of conceptualization of the skyline, in a context where urban public bodies are considering lifting height ceiling limits while multiple conflicts have emerged across European cities (Paris, Lyon and London) against various projects of tall buildings.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has published a report which covers the experience of the three-day “Height and Heritage” conference, held in London on 11-13 June 2013, including panels, presentations, social networking events and technical tours. The report is prefaced by relevant contextual data and reportage on the state of skyscrapers in Europe. Included in the volume are two DVDs, containing copies of all presentation materials, as well as video highlights of presentations, social networking events and technical tours. A preview of the report is available online while there is a charge for the full report.
