{"id":1086,"date":"2018-10-12T15:08:13","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T14:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/?p=1086"},"modified":"2018-10-12T15:08:13","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T14:08:13","slug":"scholars-of-the-wates-foundation-meet-james-wates-cbe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/scholars-of-the-wates-foundation-meet-james-wates-cbe\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholars of the Wates Foundation meet James Wates CBE"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"col-sm-12 event-teaser news-teaser\">\n<p><strong>Recipients of The Wates Foundation Scholarship had the opportunity to meet James Wates CBE, Chairman of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wates.co.uk\/\">The Wates Group<\/a>\u00a0and a previous Governor of the University of Westminster.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-12 content\">\n<div class=\"entity entity-paragraphs-item paragraphs-item-text-content col-sm-12 start end\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p>The event took place on Wednesday 3 October, giving a chance for James, a long-time supporter of the University, to connect with student beneficiaries and learn about the difference the scholarship has made to them.<\/p>\n<p>The Wates Group is one of the largest privately-owned construction, development and property services companies in the UK, working towards a sustainable long-term future of the built environment. Their charitable arm, The Wates Foundation, has made grants totalling over \u00a3100 million for almost 50 years to a range of projects and initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The Wates Scholarships offer financial assistance to Westminster\u2019s UK home students who are the first in their family to attend University and are embarking on full-time undergraduate study within the School of Architecture and Cities. Eleven students have been awarded the Wates scholarship since 2016, all studying a range of different disciples including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/architecture-and-interiors-courses\">Architecture and Interiors<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/property-and-construction-courses\/2019-20\/september\/part-time-day-evening\/real-estate-bsc-honours?next-year=1\">Real Estate<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/tourism-and-events-courses\">, Tourism and Events<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/planning-housing-and-urban-design-property-and-construction-courses\/2019-20\/september\/part-time-day-evening\/property-and-planning-bsc-honours?next-year=1\">Property and Planning<\/a>. The \u00a32,000 annual scholarship contributes to students\u2019 living costs, enabling them to fully focus on their studies whilst alleviating financial stress and worry.<\/p>\n<p>Scholar Ewan Smith, who is in his final year of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/tourism-and-events-courses\/2019-20\/september\/full-time\/tourism-and-events-management-ba-honours?next-year=1\">BA Tourism and Events Management<\/a>, said, \u201cHaving the support from Wates is an honour and an incentive to do well.
