Our Career Mentoring Scheme gives you the chance to help a student or recent graduate understand the options available to them after they finish university.<\/p>\n<p>We are always looking for new mentors who can pass on their wisdom to our students to give tailored advice and provide them with general guidance in setting realistic goals for their professional aspirations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can you gain from becoming a mentor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mentoring can be incredibly rewarding. With your advice and guidance, you can see a student flourish and achieve their ambitions or begin their chosen career path. Other benefits to mentoring include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhancing your mentoring, listening and communication skills<\/li>\n<li>Reinforcing your own knowledge and enthusiasm for your industry, and opening your eyes to new innovations coming through<\/li>\n<li>Having a positive influence on the next generation and giving back to the University of Westminster<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mentoring in 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may be questioning your ability to mentor someone, if you are currently unsure about the stability of your own career in the current, turbulent climate. But your experience and knowledge can still be incredibly valuable to our students. Many mentees benefit from learning soft skills over industry-specific insight, and any time you can dedicate to guide them in these areas can greatly enhance their chances of securing a career after graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Training <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We offer exclusive training to our mentors, which gives them an opportunity to improve their knowledge in key areas and confidence with mentoring in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Our training covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The best ways to support students and news graduates entering the working world during COVID-19<\/li>\n<li>How to use LinkedIn effectively and navigate virtual networking<\/li>\n<li>How to work effectively in a virtual mentoring session with your mentee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Joining the Career Mentoring Scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We appreciate that our mentors are often very busy and so we offer both long- and short-term mentoring options which are flexible to fit in with your lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Career Mentoring Scheme (long-term mentoring)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our award-winning\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/become-a-mentor\">Career Mentoring Scheme<\/a><\/u>\u00a0matches participants for a six-month mentoring relationship\u00a0(committing to a minimum of five\u00a0mentoring sessions). We have two intakes for the scheme each year and\u00a0<strong>applications for\u00a0cycle\u00a01\u00a0are\u00a0now\u00a0open.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Ask\u00a0a\u00a0Mentor Service (short-term mentoring)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As an alternative for those who are looking for short-term mentoring opportunities, the\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/ask-a-mentor\/\">Ask\u00a0a\u00a0Mentor Service\u00a0<\/a><\/u>offers you the chance to support our students through a one-off conversation.<\/p>\n<p>To join our community of mentors, you will need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>apply through\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/engage.westminster.ac.uk\/Form.aspx?id=587550\">this\u00a0online form<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<li>attend a virtual mentor\u00a0training session (if your application is successful)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applications\u00a0are open all year round. However,\u00a0to ensure you are\u00a0matched as part\u00a0of\u00a0cycle\u00a01,\u00a0we encourage you to apply by end of October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who are we looking for?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are looking for volunteers who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a passion to share their advice and experience<\/li>\n<li>Can spare at least six hours from this November<\/li>\n<li>Have more than three years of experience in a graduate-level role, or have insight into recruitment and selection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We welcome applications from all professionals in the UK and overseas, as mentors can conduct their sessions with students via virtual meetings.
