As the climate crisis intensifies, we all need big things to happen \u2013 and happen quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI heard this quote at an event \u2013 and ever since it stuck with me \u2013 \u2018Climate change has no time for your imposter syndrome\u2019,\u201d says Camila Gaspar Quinonez, scientist, Westminster PhD graduate and co-founder of The Atlantic Forest Association.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/camila-gaspar-quinonez\/overlay\/about-this-profile\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018It means \u2013 technically \u2013 just get up and do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camila won the University of Westminster\u2019s 2024 Recent Graduate Alumni Award, in recognition of the Association\u2019s outstanding achievements, since its inception, less than three years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila-quote-wordpress.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"379\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila-quote-wordpress-1024x379.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila-quote-wordpress-1024x379.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila-quote-wordpress-300x111.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila-quote-wordpress-768x285.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila-quote-wordpress-1536x569.png 1536w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila-quote-wordpress.png 1924w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As diverse as the Amazon, the Atlantic Forest stretches along Brazil\u2019s Atlantic coast and inland, as far as Paraguay and Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople don&#8217;t even know that it exists,\u201d Camila says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally the size of Germany and France combined, only 12% of the Atlantic Forest now remains. As well as protecting an area of the Forest (it legally owns the land), the Association is addressing the causes of deforestation and supporting local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Dr Gaspar Quinonez smiling in a forest\" class=\"wp-image-2596\" style=\"width:327px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2024\/11\/Camila5-1-edited-65x65.jpg 65w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe neighbouring areas are very economically disadvantaged and they often source income through illegal logging and hunting,\u201d Camila explains. \u201cWe are trying to develop a ranger program where we can start providing them with a fixed income to protect nature, instead of degrading it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a scientist, Camila also hopes to use the land to research the importance of biodiversity as carbon sinks, as an opportunity to develop biodiversity credit-like solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s better to protect what we have left, instead of deforesting and then planting monoculture \u2013 known to be detrimental for local biodiversity and a limited long-term impact as a carbon sink.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Bikke Chettri, a Westminster Software Engineering graduate, sustainability means innovation everywhere\u2026 including issues that are often overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think there is a whole thing about British people and their love affair with toilet paper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chakow Limited, Bikke\u2019s nine-month-old start-up, provides affordable bidet extensions for toilets, as a sustainable and hygienic alternative to toilet paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he was growing up in Nepal in the 1980s, there was no toilet paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just showered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even living in the UK, years later, Bikke still favoured the bidet. We\u2019re talking about whole forest getting destroyed in Indonesia and elsewhere. There is nothing sustainable about toilet paper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike a bidet \u2013 which can be used again and again \u2013 toilet paper is the ultimate single use product. Bidets are widely used across Asia and Europe, including our closest neighbour \u2013 France. They\u2019re also growing in popularity in Australia and the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChakow wants to be the company that makes this a movement in UK and also in Europe,\u201d Bikke says. \u201cWe want to be the brand that makes it affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever your product, as Chakow proves, there is always a greener way of doing things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny business can be done in a sustainable way,\u201d says Marc Fegarsky, founder of Schparkly Creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from the US, Marc completed his Marketing MA at Westminster in 2020, before co-founding Schparkly Creative with his wife in the same year. One of our favourite projects we&#8217;ve done recently is a therapist who specialises in underrepresented cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2019s one kind of business they promise they will never, ever work with\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were offered a very, very large amount of money by an oil company to do some work, and we didn&#8217;t take the job, even though we really needed the money,\u201d Marc says. \u201cWe think, in the long run, that&#8217;s going to pay off. This is our brand. This is what we do. We want people to understand that we&#8217;re walking the walk and not just talking the talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Westminster has adopted the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework to cement its commitment to sustainable development. A core tenet of its positive impact will always lie in its empowerment of students and alumni to take their own positive impact out into the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Westminster Enterprise Network (WeNetwork) offers a range of programmes and support to budding businesses from students and alumni. The opening of Zone 29, Westminster\u2019s new centre of enterprise, set to open in late 2025, will strengthen this support further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chakow received funding and mentoring from WeNetwork\u2019s Elevate Programme last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWestminster\u2019s been great,\u201d Bikke says of the experience. \u201cWhen we started out, I was all over the place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elevate focuses on growing an existing business and teaching skills like marketing and making your business financially sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe found out the website we had was really bad, and we had to redo it,\u201d Bikke says. \u201cWe changed our whole marketing strategy. So, it was a lot to take for six months, but it was an incredible help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After winning the WeNetwork\u2019s Big Idea Competition 2022, Schparkly received support tailored, strategic support, including up to \u00a310,000 funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it probably jumped our business forward three or four years \u2013 just because you&#8217;re not having to learn by trial and error,\u201d Marc says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schparkly, in turn, gives back to the community, by teaching a WeNetwork class and taking on interns from Westminster\u2019s Marketing courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of the interns have chosen us because of our sustainability stance \u2013 they were excited about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the funding and mentoring they received, Marc also values the relationships he has built with fellow Westminster entrepreneurs, through the WeNetwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the community is fantastic,\u201d he says. \u201cI&#8217;ve had such a great experience with Westminster. They&#8217;ve done more post graduate aftercare than any school I could imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camila agrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think they do a fantastic job of keeping the community alive,\u201d she says, adding: \u201cI&#8217;ve always been involved with Westminster, speaking to new students, sharing my career journey, and any way I can give back \u2013 because I got so much out of being a Westminster student.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what should budding ecopreneurs bear in mind before they embark on their journeys?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think perseverance is very important,\u201d Marc says. \u201cA lot of people are going to tell you \u2018no\u2019, and it&#8217;s going to be hard.
