An important aspect of the project has been considering disabled people\u2019s views on reduced mass private car ownership. We considered this key to make sure that changes to current transport provision do not exacerbate the already existing situation of \u2018transport disability\u2019, where the limited accessibility of available transport options further disables people with a variety of impairments, older people, and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"565\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/ata\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/image.png\" alt=\"A visual representation of the difference between equality and equity. In the equity situation, the same four people use four bikes adapted to those requirements.\" class=\"wp-image-1125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/ata\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/image.png 565w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/ata\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/image-300x294.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/ata\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/image-65x65.png 65w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Using interviews with representatives of Disabled People\u2019s Organisations and focus groups with disabled residents, we advanced a reflection on the current challenges of \u2018<em>travelling in a car-centric city<\/em>\u2019 for disabled people as well as&nbsp; key recommendations for making sure that changes in transport systems can improve accessibility and liveability for people who have so far paid the consequences of a car-centric society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We learnt that there is an immediate need to substantially improve walking, wheeling and cycling environments; an urgent need to upgrade public transport provision and ensure that all buses and trains are fully accessible and, most importantly, a requirement for a substantial cultural shift towards open dialogue and coproduction allowing disabled people to truly take part in the construction of equitable car-free futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"643\" height=\"321\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/ata\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/image-1.png\" alt=\"Quote reads: &quot;I think it's not going to work if people like us are an added-on thought at the end.
