Maha Javed, BEng Smart Computer Systems Graduate 2023, boldly transitioned into the finance and business industry. Today, she is named as Pakistan’s youngest female in Global Finance, breaking barriers, and inspiring others with her journey of success.
How did you go from international student at the University of Westminster to becoming a professional in global finance?
It all started when I enrolled at the University of Westminster to study Smart Computer Systems Engineering. At the time, I had no idea that this decision would open doors to exciting opportunities. The education and experiences I gained at the University of Westminster laid a strong foundation for my career ahead. They gave me the skills knowledge and confidence I needed to thrive in a competitive industry.
Upon graduating, I found myself at a crossroads. While many of my peers were pursuing traditional career paths, I decided to explore the dynamic world of investment banking. The catalyst for this decision came when I was selected to join the Wise Women Code program at Wise Bank in 2021. It gave me a firsthand look into banking operations and got me thinking about the bigger picture. Then, I dove even deeper by taking part in the Women in Tech program at JPMorgan, where I gained valuable insights into business and finance. These experiences convinced me that this was the right path for me, and I’ve been pursuing it ever since.
What were some of the significant milestones that you achieved during your time at the University of Westminster?
Reflecting on my time at the University of Westminster, I’m proud of achieving significant milestones that have shaped my journey. Being named a Top 10 Finalist in the UK Undergraduate of the Year Awards 2021 and receiving awards like the Undergraduate Top Scorer Award and the Engineering Medal were truly humbling experiences. Alongside these achievements, I also took the initiative to create the eduBox device, aimed at providing educational resources to children with no internet access. Furthermore, I made a Scara Robot arm for my final year project, which was featured at the Net-Company Awards in 2023. These experiences not only gave me the confidence to transition into a new career path in finance, but also fuelled my passion for innovation and social responsibility.
Today, I have carved out a niche for myself in the global finance sector. It’s truly an honour and a privilege to be one of the few professionals in investment banking proudly representing my home country, Pakistan.
How do you define success?
Beyond my achievements, what truly drives me is the opportunity to pave the way for others. I firmly believe that success is not defined by the heights we reach, but by the barriers we break and the paths we forge for those who come after us. By sharing my experiences and knowledge, I aim to empower others to reach their full potential and contribute to a more equitable and inclusive industry landscape. For me, success is not just about reaching new heights personally, but about uplifting and supporting others along the way.
What advice would you give other students based on your experiences at the University of Westminster?
As a proud University of Westminster alumna, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities it has offered me. I offer this advice to my fellow students: dare to dream boldly and chase your passions relentlessly. I encourage you to embrace every opportunity, push beyond your comfort zones, and believe in your ability to achieve greatness. With determination and perseverance, the sky’s the limit.
