With the support of the Student Volunteering Services, part of the Careers and Employability Service<\/em>, each year, hundreds of Westminster students volunteer to support charitable causes that matter to them.<\/p>\n

So, why volunteer? Are you keen to enhance your skill set? Would you like to expand your network? Do you want to make a difference to your local community? These are just some of the benefits of volunteering, read on to find out more!<\/p>\n

  1. Volunteering enhances your employability\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    There seems to be a century-old debate as to which is more important: work\u00a0experience\u00a0or\u00a0education. The answer lies somewhere in the middle.\u00a0Whilst subject specific knowledge and a degree alone is no longer enough, volunteering can complement your studies and enable you to gain essential work experience in a real-world voluntary setting.<\/p>\n

    Equally, do you know how to write a winning CV or application form? Are you able to present yourself successfully at interviews? Rest assured, the process of applying for volunteering opportunities will become second nature and a valuable basis for future placement or graduate applications.<\/p>\n

    1. You can make\u00a0a\u00a0difference!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Let\u2019s\u00a0be honest: within the digital arena, we have\u00a0all posted, shared and tweeted our thoughts in support of various causes, in the hope of making a difference. There is, however, no easier way to make a\u00a0positive\u00a0impact, than\u00a0signing\u00a0up as volunteer.<\/p>\n

        Enjoy editing photos\u00a0and\u00a0writing\u00a0content?\u00a0Volunteer as\u00a0a Digital Marketeer.\u00a0Keen to share\u00a0advice and\u00a0knowledge with others? Volunteer as a mentor.\u00a0Eager to\u00a0socialise and meet new people? Volunteer as an Events Assistant. Through volunteering, you will not\u00a0only\u00a0spend more time doing what you love, but concurrently will be enhancing your employability in a professional working environment. Now that\u2019s a win!<\/p>\n

        Likewise, as the graduate market is becoming increasingly more competitive, coupled with the impacts of Covid-19, it is fair to say that volunteering is not only enjoyable, but a worthwhile opportunity to develop and evidence your skills, as well as to minimise any gaps.<\/p>\n

          Through volunteering you will often be interacting with\u00a0professionals who\u00a0just happen to know \u2026 yes, you guessed it – other professionals!\u00a0Even if you are volunteering in a sector unrelated to your chosen career path, don\u2019t underestimate the value of your professional connections in enabling you to approach the \u2018hidden\u2019 jobs market!<\/p>\n

            Use volunteering to discover, within a no-pressure environment, whether a role or sector, is right for you! Even better, there is no limit to how much you can volunteer,\u00a0meaning that you can try\u00a0out a range of different roles or even\u00a0sectors,\u00a0so that you are better informed when it matters most!\u00a0\u00a0If, at the end of the volunteering, you decide that it\u2019s not for you, you can strike it off your graduate job search list!<\/p>\n

              Whilst Volunteering undoubtedly makes a positive impact to society and the wider community, it can also boost your mental health!<\/p>\n
