However, getting started can be extremely difficult. Here are some pointers to assist you in finding the right path and securing your spot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A graduate scheme is an entry level training programme, which you can apply for if you have or are about to get a degree. There are also many graduate jobs that are not part of graduate schemes, but they still provide excellent opportunities for graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where to find graduate scheme\/jobs:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Check student and graduate websites for vacancies and tips for applying for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prospects.ac.uk\/\">Prospects<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcareers.service.gov.uk\/explore-careers\">National Careers Service<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightnetwork.co.uk\/academy\/westminster-careers\/\">Bright Network<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/home\">LinkedIn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graduate-jobs.com\/\">Graduatejobs.com<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/studentcircus.com\/\">Student Circus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gethighered.com\/\">Get Highered<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/targetjobs.co.uk\/\">Target Jobs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gradcracker.com\/\">Gradcracker<\/a><\/li><li>Contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/current-students\/support-and-services\/careers-and-employability-service\">university careers service<\/a> and if a recent graduate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/support-and-services\/careers-and-employability-service\/early-careers-support-for-graduates\">Early Careers Support for graduates<\/a><\/li><li>Look for employer events, careers fairs, and job opportunities via <a href=\"https:\/\/engage-employability.westminster.ac.uk\/unauth\">Engage<\/a> &#8211; meet the hiring teams, network and build your professional reputation<\/li><li>Follow companies on social media<\/li><li>Speak to someone at a company you\u2019re interested in via<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/home\"> LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Work experience:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers want to know you have the key skills and interest they are looking for. It may help if you\u2019ve gained some experience by doing the following, (further information can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/engage-employability.westminster.ac.uk\/unauth\">Engage<\/a>):&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>An\u00a0internship e.g. Virtual Experience Programmes\/Internships via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/landing\/westminster\/r2e362e2uWooNrm23\/careers\">Forage<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springpod.com\/virtual-work-experience\">Springpod<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightnetwork.co.uk\/academy\/westminster-careers\/\">Bright Network<\/a><\/li><li>A work experience placement<\/li><li>An insight day<\/li><li>A placement year<\/li><li>An extracurricular activity<\/li><li>A retail or other part-time job<\/li><li>Voluntary work<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prepare a strong application<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To strengthen your application for a graduate job:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Research the company \u2013 use their website, LinkedIn profile and read business articles and industry journals<\/li><li>Read up on experiences from previous applicants &#8211; on sites like the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestudentroom.co.uk\/\">Student Room<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.co.uk\/index.htm\">Glassdoor<\/a><\/li><li>Develop your applications skills&nbsp;\u2013 &nbsp;via <a href=\"https:\/\/engage-employability.westminster.ac.uk\/unauth\">1:1 career consultations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/westminster.careercentre.me\/Members\">Engage plus<\/a> and attending workshops like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/support-and-services\/careers-and-employability-service\/early-career-support-for-graduates\/graduate-success-series\">Graduate Success Series<\/a> and the Virtual Skills Academy workshops<\/li><li>Book an appointment and ask a <a href=\"https:\/\/engage-employability.westminster.ac.uk\/unauth\">careers consultant<\/a> to check your application before you submit it<\/li><li>Learn and practice a psychometric test via <a href=\"https:\/\/engage-employability.westminster.ac.uk\/unauth\">Engage <\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Practise a \u2018mock interview\u2019 &#8211; this can be with a friend or family member. Career services such as&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/engage-employability.westminster.ac.uk\/unauth\">1:1 career consultations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/shortlist.me\/\">Shortlist.Me<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/westminster.careercentre.me\/Members\">Engage plus<\/a> are great tools to help you practice with interviews<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My top tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep an eye out for when graduate schemes and internships open and deadlines. Every year, the recruitment cycle for big companies begins in the summer for entry the following year. Between September and November, many graduate schemes are advertised. However, some companies will recruit all year, and many graduate jobs are advertised just when someone is needed in the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/current-students\/employability-and-career-development\/exploring-careers\/mentoring\/ask-a-mentor-service\">Ask A Mentor service<\/a>&nbsp;to have a one-off conversation with an experienced professional&nbsp;from our hugely diverse pool of mentors&nbsp;that can help you go where you want to go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be disappointed or disheartened by the outcome of a single application. This doesn\u2019t determine your success in other applications.
