{"id":1040,"date":"2020-07-31T13:01:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T13:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/contemporarychina\/?p=1040"},"modified":"2020-07-31T13:01:57","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T13:01:57","slug":"review-outcry-and-whisper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/contemporarychina\/review-outcry-and-whisper\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Outcry and Whisper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"twitter-share-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=Read - Review: Outcry and Whispers - on the Contemporary China Centre Blog http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/contemporarychina\/review-outcry-and-whisper\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-456\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/contemporarychina\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2016\/02\/twitter_share_icon_wordpress-1-300x100.png\" alt=\"Share this post in Twitter\" width=\"80\" height=\"26\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Written by S\u00e9agh Kehoe<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><em>Outcry and Whisper<\/em>, which had its world premier earlier this year at the prestigious Visions du Reel International Film Festival, is an important and engaging new documentary film by Huang Wenhai, Zeng Jinyan, and Trish McAdam about the gendered politics of struggle and protest in contemporary China and Hong Kong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">This collaborative project follows on from Huang and Zeng\u2019s groundbreaking feature documentary film <em>We the Workers <\/em>(2017), which examined labour relations and activism amid the wave of workers\u2019 strikes that took place across the south of China between 2009 and 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Focusing on the lives of female factory workers, artists, rights activists, and intellectuals, the film provides a rich and powerful exploration of individual and collective autonomy, agency, struggle and protest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1044 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/contemporarychina\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2020\/07\/image-2-300x188.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"361\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Shot over the course of eight years, <em>Outcry and Whisper<\/em>\u00a0covers impressive terrain, moving deftly between stories of labour organising, performance art, feminist gatherings, Tiananmen mothers fighting for justice for their children, the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement, as well as Zeng\u2019s own experiences of intense state surveillance and oppression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Journeying deep into practices of coercion, intimidation, harassment, and exploitation by factory management and the state, the documentary film captures the gendered dimensions of precarity and political violence under patriarchal authoritarian capitalism, and the vital role played by women in social movements across China and Hong Kong today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1042 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/contemporarychina\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2020\/07\/image-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"203\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Featuring arresting and imaginative animations from the talented visual artist Trish McAdam, this is an insightful and challenging exploration of the pain, trauma, hope, and sometimes even the healing that unfolds through the possibilities of collective struggle in what so often appear to be impossible circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">An original, raw, and intimate portrayal of women\u2019s struggles for justice across private and public spheres, <em>Outcry and Whisper<\/em>\u00a0is a vital Chinese language documentary and is recommended to all who are interested in learning more about the various ways in which class, labour, and gender intersect in China and Hong Kong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1043 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/contemporarychina\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2020\/07\/image-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"203\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><em>Outcry and Whisper will screen\u00a0<\/em><i>at the 19th IFI Documentary Festival, Irish Film Institute, 23-27 September 2020, online and in cinema, and t<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><i>he 39th Jean Rouch International Film Festival, 13-21 November 2020, at the Mus\u00e9e de l&#8217;Homme in Paris, with more screening dates to be announced soon.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><em>S\u00e9agh Kehoe is a postdoctoral\u00a0fellow at the Contemporary China Centre, University of Westminster.
