{"id":2331,"date":"2024-08-28T16:21:47","date_gmt":"2024-08-28T16:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/doctoralresearcherdevelopmentprogramme\/?page_id=2331"},"modified":"2026-07-28T10:15:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T10:15:06","slug":"petts-memorial-fund","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/doctoralresearcherdevelopmentprogramme\/petts-memorial-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Petts Memorial Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 20%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">In memory of the late Professor Geoffrey Petts, former Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Westminster, the University has established a research fund to recognise the distinguished contributions he made to interdisciplinary river science research and his belief that all students, regardless of their financial situation, should have the opportunity to succeed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Professor Geoffrey Petts Memorial Fund<\/strong> offers two forms of financial support to University of Westminster doctoral researchers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Financial support to undertake fieldwork<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial support for the purchase of research equipment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fund offers particular support for interdisciplinary research which addresses global challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Funding Available<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fund will cover expenses <strong>up to \u00a31000<\/strong>. The fieldwork fund is intended to offset additional costs incurred by doctoral researchers due to the need to conduct research outside of the University of Westminster. It is not meant to cover costs that would be accrued regardless of fieldwork status (e.g. books, conference costs, subsistence costs, tuition fees, other equipment and\/or services considered a normal doctoral researcher expense). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funding can be put towards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Doctoral researcher travel costs necessary for the research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodation costs necessary for the research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incentive payments or token gifts to research participants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Materials, supplies or other services essential to the research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Costs for accessing datasets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scheme is open to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All fully enrolled doctoral researchers, full-time\/part-time and distance learning (i.e. at the time of application and undertaking the fieldwork, applicants should be fully enrolled),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applicants should not have been awarded their degree before the fieldwork takes place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fieldwork that takes place between 1 August and 31 July of the current academic year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-funded doctoral researchers will be given first consideration in selecting the successful applications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retrospective applications are not permitted (retrospective in this case means fieldwork done in the previous academic year or in a period coinciding with a previous call deadline).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, researchers doing PhD by Published Work are not eligible for this scheme which is there to support fieldwork and research which has yet to be undertaken, whereas the nature of a PhD by Published work means that the research element is usually already done (and published).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please note:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An ethics application needs to have been begun for the proposed research\/fieldwork.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doctoral researchers must also complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/current-students\/guides-and-policies\/student-matters\/fieldwork-and-offsite-working\">risk assessment<\/a> prior to going on fieldwork.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doctoral researchers on visas must make sure to report their change in location to the University and ensure that they continue to engage with their supervisors (via video conferencing, telephone and email) through the period of fieldwork.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The University is unable to offer advice to students on obtaining visas for other countries. Doctoral researchers are directly and solely responsible securing the necessary documentation themselves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There are normally four calls for applications throughout the academic year<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>For full information, including the application form, call deadlines and the application process please visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/research\/graduate-school\/graduate-school-funding-schemes\/professor-geoffrey-petts-memorial-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Graduate School Website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-small-font-size\">Please note:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All applications will be reviewed following the deadline for submissions and applicants notified of the outcome as per the timetable above<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Late submissions will not be considered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Successful applicants will be required to submit a multi-media report detailing how the experience has benefited their research and personal development. This report must be submitted within one month of their return from fieldwork. This should be sent to their Doctoral Coordinator and the Graduate School.
