Session 1
Introduction to EDI: Promoting Equality and Diversity in the Classroom
This session introduces the core principles of EDI and explains why they are central to effective teaching and learning. You will explore the teacher’s role in creating inclusive and supportive classroom environments and consider how everyday teaching decisions can either support or limit learner participation. The session also introduces Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and differentiated instruction, outlining how these approaches help address learner diversity and promote equitable access to learning. By the end of the session, you will have a foundational understanding of EDI and practical strategies that support all learners.
By the end of this session, you will:
• Understand the fundamental principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom.
• Recognise how the teacher’s role and behaviour influence the creation of an inclusive learning environment.
• Identify practical strategies that support diverse learners, including elements of Universal Design for Learning and differentiated instruction.
• Reflect on your own practice and pinpoint actions to strengthen inclusivity in your teaching.
