This workshop will focus on one of the key areas that can hugely impact on your abilities to get through your PhD experience.\u00a0\u00a0How might feelings of isolation or loneliness affect your studies?\u00a0\u00a0Feeling alone whilst being part of a PhD cohort is a very common experience, but why is this and what can be done about it?\u00a0\u00a0Do these feelings have to have either a negative or positive impact, or is there a more nuanced understanding to be gained through investigating ideas of being alone whilst being a Doctoral Researcher? Come and explore how feelings of solitude form part of the researcher’s life whilst doing a PhD (and beyond) and share how others have navigated these often difficult and unwelcomed emotions. This workshop will offer both practical and more critical tools that aim to offer a helping hand in what can sometimes feel like an intense experience of being alone.\u00a0<\/p>

It is open to anyone who feels that they may benefit.\u00a0<\/p>

Donna-Marie Holder is a doctoral researcher in Education at Brunel University London, in the final stages of writing up her thesis. She has a first-class honours degree in Education from Brunel University London, and a MSc from University College London in Psychological Sciences. Her research has focused on intersections of \u2018race\u2019 in academia and special needs education, due to the structural inequity that persists in education and in wider society. Her studies include the perceived influences of the underrepresentation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) academic staff in higher education, and the experiences and challenges of British BAME postgraduate students. Her thesis explores how \u2018race\u2019 is taught in English special schools. Her work will in part be auto\/biographical in nature, as she is the mother of a young Black son with autism and her work as a special needs educator. Donna-Marie is also the founder of The Black Doctoral Researchers Collective <\/em>for Black PhD students and Ed Docs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
