Join us for an opening reception to celebrate the launch of this year’s Graduate School Festival. Come meet fellow doctoral researchers across the university over drinks and refreshments.<\/p>

The evening will comprise a showing of Gothic Opera<\/em> by Howard Lukk, doctoral researcher based at the Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media, University of Westminster.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Opera has always incorporated the latest technology when it became available as it transitioned from the royal courts in Italy to the sophisticated modern venues designed for the large audiences of today. With the abundance of new staging technology\u2014digital projection and LED walls specifically\u2014one can expand the opera art form to aspire towards Wagner\u2019s\u00a0Gesamtkunstwerk<\/em>\u00a0(total work of art) to include moving images to the performance, not just as a scenic device but as a part of the narrative.<\/p>

Along with documenting this transition, Howard Lukk will be creating an opera to push on the boundaries of this traditional art form. A sample of this new \u2018total work of art\u2019\u2014a short \u2018silent\u2019 film\u2014will be shown, accompanied by a newly composed piece of music, to provide an insight to the \u2018Gothic Opera\u2019. Incorporating a mixture of classical, nu-metal rock music, classic ballet, modern dance, and projected images; the narrative is told through song, dance, and moving images completely absent of the spoken word.<\/p>

Anna and Connor, struggling with being outsiders in a small town, run away to the big city and get immersed in a Gothic lifestyle. Their relationship turns upside down when a \u2018vampire\u2019 in the Goth community comes between them and puts Anna on a downward spiral, forcing Connor to come to terms with a responsibility he never anticipated.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
