It is a tradition that follows the ideals of an American Thanksgiving but instead of celebrating with family, you celebrate with some of your favourite friends. Unlike Christmas, Friendsgiving does not require any gift giving. It is simply a time to show up, eat a ton of food, and share a few words on how thankful you are to have friends to celebrate this occasion with. Since I am an American who believes highly in this tradition, I am going to give you a few tips on how to best celebrate Friendsgiving internationally:

1. Set the mood

While people are simply coming over to stuff their faces with food, they will appreciate the warm, Autumnal vibe that Thanksgiving brings. By hanging a “Friendsgiving” banner, or setting the table with an Autumnal color scheme, people will enjoy stuffing their faces just a little bit more. It’s a fact.

2. Invite your favourite friends

People will hear about this event and become jealous if they are not invited, so make sure to not leave anyone out. Invite people that have never experienced Friendsgiving before so you can capture their genuine excitement when celebrating Friendsgiving. Luckily there is no way to make a small Thanksgiving feast, so take on the mentality “the more the merrier.”

3. Prepare a TON of food

It’s called a Friendsgiving feast for a reason. Everyone will eat a shameful amount, but there is no shame because that is what is expected of them. Be sure to include the classics such as stuffing, turkey, green bean casserole, broccoli and cheese casserole, gravy, mashed potatoes, and last but not least, sweet potato casserole. Finding ingredients for these American dishes can be challenging, but don’t worry Amazon will supply anything that cannot be found in your typical British supermarket, and trust me, it’s worth the effort.

4. Let the world know how much you are about to eat

When you’ve loaded your plate up with food, make sure you get a picture of it and post it to some form of social media. What you’re doing is helping people realise how Thanksgiving should be celebrated around the world and that is the best realisation you could possibly give to people.

5. Dig in!

Once you’ve added all of the food you possibly can to your plate, it is time to sit down and enjoy it. While the most important part of Friendsgiving is being with friends, it is also all about eating the food that has been hyped up all year.

Friendsgiving is not just a time to justify eating a surplus of delicious food. It is, more importantly, a time to reflect on how thankful you are to have such wonderful friends, and thankfully, this mentality can be celebrated worldwide.

Read this post and other stories on Taylor’s personal blog

Friendsgiving is, in my opinion, one of the best times of the year.
