This can be hard for international students, like me, as it&#8217;s difficult to fly back home and spend it with family and friends. However, London offers a vibrant and diverse Muslim community that welcomes international students with open arms during this holy month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Connecting with the community<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">London has a vast Muslim population and one of the best ways to spend Ramadan in London is by attending the various Iftars and Suhoors that are hosted by Islamic societies in the city. These events provide a great opportunity to meet other Muslims, learn more about Ramadan, and break the fast with fellow believers. It&#8217;s also a great way to get a feel for the different cultures and countries represented in London\u2019s Muslim community and learn more about how the holy month is celebrated in different Arab and Muslim communities. This year, an\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/event\/ok1kLZm29xJ\/ramadan-pavilion-march-may-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open Iftar<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0takes place everyday at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington which has also rented pop-up mosque and Ramadan Pavillon for Muslims and non-Muslims. Check out websites like\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eventbrite.co.uk\/d\/united-kingdom--london\/open-iftar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eventbrite<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/active-muslims\/events\/292257742\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meetup<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0for listings of Iftar events happening in the city. Another way to connect with the community is through\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/uwisoc\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISOC<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0(Islamic society at the University of Westminster) which organises different events during Ramadan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Finding Halal Food during Ramadan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6983\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/04\/middle-eastern-restaurants-edgware-road-london-45526406.jpg\" alt=\"Middle Eastern restaurants on Edgeware Road-Ramadan in London-Feriel Lejmi\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/04\/middle-eastern-restaurants-edgware-road-london-45526406.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/04\/middle-eastern-restaurants-edgware-road-london-45526406-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/04\/middle-eastern-restaurants-edgware-road-london-45526406-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/04\/middle-eastern-restaurants-edgware-road-london-45526406-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Being away from home during Ramadan also means missing all the food and family gatherings. Food has always been a big challenge for me because I\u2019m very sensitive and I can\u2019t cook. However, London is a diverse city that caters to a range of dietary requirements, including halal food. There are many halal restaurants and food options available throughout the city.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/the-legacy-of-edgware-road-shawarma-for-arab-brits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edgware Road (dubbed &#8216;Little Cairo&#8217; or &#8216;Little Beirut&#8217;)<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0is one of the places that has lots of Middle Eastern restaurants offering halal options and Iftar menus during Ramadan. Different restaurants in Mayfair and Knigtsbridge also have halal options in their menus. Additionally, many supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury&#8217;s, and Waitrose offer halal meat and other halal food products along with other Ramadan edition meals and deals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Exploring the City<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7027 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/05\/Feriel-with-friends-Happy-Ramadan-London-West-End_800.jpg\" alt=\"Feriel with friends-Happy Ramadan-London West-End\" width=\"800\" height=\"945\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/05\/Feriel-with-friends-Happy-Ramadan-London-West-End_800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/05\/Feriel-with-friends-Happy-Ramadan-London-West-End_800-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/05\/Feriel-with-friends-Happy-Ramadan-London-West-End_800-127x150.jpg 127w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2023\/05\/Feriel-with-friends-Happy-Ramadan-London-West-End_800-768x907.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Probably the Ramadan lights installed for the first time in London\u2019s West End in Coventry street is the best display to see this Ramadan if you are in London. The 30,000 lights illuminated with \u2018Happy Ramadan\u2019 have been switched on by the Mayor of London, Saqib Khan, who is one of the 1.3 million Muslims in London celebrating Ramadan.
