This working paper offers an evaluation of the performance of the port of Marseille-Fos, an analysis of the impact of the port on its territory and an assessment of policies and governance in this field. It examines declining port performance over the last decades and identifies the principal factors that have contributed to it. The effect of the ports on economic and environmental questions is studied and quantified where possible. The value added of the port cluster of Marseille-Fos is calculated and its inter-linkages with other economic sectors and other regions in France delineated. The paper outlines the impact of the port’s operations, and shows how their activities spill over into other regions than the one in which the port of Marseille-Fos is located. The major policies governing the ports are assessed, along with policies governing transport and economic development, the environment and spatial planning. These include measures instituted by the port authorities, as well as by local, regional and national governments. Governance mechanisms at these different levels are described and analysed. Based on the report’s findings, recommendations are proposed with a view to improving port performance and increasing the positive effects of the port of Marseille-Fos on its territory.

The construction industry’s annual skills forecast, prepared by CITB-ConstructionSkills with input from employers across the UK, paints a stark picture for the construction industry during 2012. The report further suggests that the prospects for the next 5 years (2013 – 17) are equally discouraging. Nearly every sector of the industry will continue to struggle with only the private housing, repair and maintenance and industrial sectors predicted to achieve anything like consistent growth. Regional reports are also available.

As part of the United Utilities Process Alliance, the Galliford Try Costain Atkins Joint Venture at Liverpool, Atkins have used BIM to help deliver significant cost and safety benefits on the development of a new wastewater treatment facility being constructed adjacent to the existing Sandon Dock site. Directed by the GCA board of Directors to employ a Building Information Modelling strategy for the detailed design and construction of the £130 million project in April 2012, and with commencement of the implementation phase imminent, project detail designers had to quickly develop a strategy which could deliver sufficient aspects of BIM to enable the joint venture to achieve BIM Level 2 competency. The strategy was to adopt 3D modelling to drive the project forward in a Collaborative and Integrated method. In essence, the GCA approach was to get the right information to the right people at the right time and in the right format in order to foster a working environment in which, various BIM applications could be demonstrated at given opportunities in the design and construction process.

The exponential growth in international tourism arrivals seen over recent decades would not have been possible without the innovation and expansion of the air transport industry, which today accounts for more than half of cross-border tourist arrivals worldwide. Over the next twenty years, growth in international arrivals is forecaste at 3.3% annually. However, for this to happen, policy makers, Official Tourism Organizations, airlines, airports and tourism service providers will have to develop and intensify their relations. This report, published by the World Tourism Organization, outlines how such partnerships are taking shape around the world.

The National Audit Office has published a report which highlights five key risks to the value for money of projects included in the government’s national infrastructure plan. The government expects £310 billion to be spent by 2015 and beyond on new infrastructure projects in sectors such as energy, rail, roads, water, waste, flood defences and digital communications. Such large-scale infrastructure projects pose significant challenges. With limited funds available, the government is looking to private companies to wholly own and finance around 64 per cent of the £310 billion, with the burden of funding likely to shift towards the public as consumers rather than taxpayers.
