The European Environment Agency’s annual report under the Transport and Environment Reporting Mechanism (TERM) assesses the environmental impact of transport across Europe. TERM 2012 presents the most relevant and up to date information on the main issues regarding transport and environment in Europe, particularly in areas with specific policy targets such as greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, transport demand levels, noise and other issues. It also offers an overview of the transport sector’s impact on air pollutant emissions and air quality. It discusses the contributions made by all modes of transport to direct air pollutant emissions and also to ‘secondary’ air pollutants formed in the atmosphere.

Analysing the security risks resulting from climate change is essential for effective policy-making. The Organization for Security Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the European Environment Agency (EEA) is running the joint project ‘Security implications of climate change in the OSCE regions’ with the aim of improving understanding of the links between global megatrends and environment, and the security of food, fuel and water in different regions. It also aims to enhance cooperation and networking among the main institutions addressing climate security issues. A participatory-based scenario-building approach was used as a tool to help explore the complex and uncertain impacts stemming from climate change. This brochure provides a project overview, which includes the results of workshops carried out so far.

The challenges and prospects of architectural policies in Europe were addressed at the European Forum of Architectural Policies (EFAP), organised by EFAP, under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency, in cooperation with the Department of Public Works of the Ministry of Communications and Works, the Cyprus Architectural Association and the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber. The conference constituted a forum for constructive discussions between architects and senior officials from EU Member States and was geared towards providing tools for promoting architectural quality and its impact on everyday life. The results are expected to contribute to the improvement of the legislative framework towards better architectural creation, urban design and to provide solutions to social justice, ecological and economic crisis. The survey found that planning applications for converting offices to residential in London’s West End increased by 53% in 2011. The trend for conversions has been gaining pace during the last decade, but now, owing to the rocketing values of prime London residential, is also encompassing relatively modern office blocks.
