The Centre for London has published a manifesto which presents  a bold agenda for the London, centred on the devolution of power from central government, alongside measures to strengthen the accountability of London leaders. The author argues that without these reforms there is a real danger of the city falling victim to its own success and becoming an ever tougher, more polarised place.

Whereabouts London is a new web application launched by the Future Cities Catapult. It takes 235 open datasets including adult qualification level, proximity to green space, general health and Flickr photo count and overlays them on a map of London to create eight new neighbourhoods, or ‘Whereabouts.’ Whereabouts are not defined by physical location, defining their catchment area by the type of people who live there, the benefits they enjoy and the challenges they face. Reimagining neighbourhoods in this way could help local authorities to commission shared services more effectively. It could help a transport provider to tailor a service more efficiently, make behaviour change campaigns scalable to new areas of a city or reduce start-up costs for innovative new businesses, to name just a few applications.

This review undertaken by TfL Planning attempts to bring together analysis of a range of different travel trends that have been observed in London in recent years, and to understand what has caused them and how they interrelate. Given that there are so many factors that can influence travel demand, the review does not claim to prove all of the reasons why the trends that have developed over the past two decades have been observed. Rather, it aims to offer a plausible explanation for the trends in travel demand based on a description of some of the major factors that have had an influence. A series of supplementary reports will be published to explore particular aspects of the topics covered in more detail than can be covered here.

Inner London National Character Area

As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper, Biodiversity 2020 and the European Landscape Convention, has been revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decisionmaking framework for the natural environment. NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will also help to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental Opportunity (SEOs) are suggested, which draw on this integrated information. The SEOs offer guidance on the critical issues, which could help to achieve sustainable growth and a more secure environmental future. This profile was placed online in September 2013.
