- what research you undertook into the job market for your work experience and for gaining a commission for Individual Audio Project.
Career paths in media
I have researched the Chinese media market in general, as that is my career path and area of specialisation.
After my research, there are five main categories of employment for media students, namely paper media, television stations at all levels, various new media companies, advertising agencies and film and television programme writers and directors.
Paper media
There is no doubt that the paper media is declining in all countries, but there are still a large number of official newspapers and daily newspapers in the city. I’ve always felt that paper is a dying industry in modern times, so I went online to look for job listings for major newspapers and found that they were looking for online editors and editors for periodicals and newspapers, and they also have an online reading service, which feels like the industry is changing to meet the new times.
Television stations
China has a four-tier mechanism of running stations at the central, provincial, municipal and county levels, and each of the different levels of television stations will require news interviewing, videography, post-editing and broadcast hosting talents in demand. At present, the traditional media is just television and radio, newspapers and radio. In TV stations you can do the filming, writing, post-editing, TV programmers, presenters, producers and so on. In my opinion, although the current new media has taken up a large proportion of users, the position of traditional media has only been hit, not collapsed, and still occupies a large part of the market. When people are relaxing, many of them still choose to turn on the TV to watch the news or watch the variety shows, movies and TV dramas shown on TV.
New media
With the rapid development of the internet, new media is thriving. New media operations are also a very good choice. Compared to traditional media, new media, which is based on digital and internet technology, is one of the industries with potential in the information age. As a result, the online media industry is in dire need of a large number of creative people who are knowledgeable about media and the internet to explore the market. Online media is not as rigid as traditional media, I think it will require more creative spirit and critical thinking skills and must have its unique insights and ideas.
Advertising agencies
A variety of advertising agencies recruit many professionals every year, typically in the fields of soft copy writing for WeChat, short video production and filming, advertising copy writing and so on. Advertising is an industry that keeps up with the times and is always on-trend.
Writing and directing for film and television
Many film and television productions require people with a keen sense of journalism and news writing skills, who are familiar with the production process and presentation of television programmes, and who have read a lot of films.
I have had three internships, the first with a new media company and the second and third as a director or writer/director for a film or variety show, which can be very tiring work. You could also say that the industry pays less and it takes a long time to get through the process from the beginning to success, but at the same time, it’s also very interesting to be in the production process.
