Treatment
Since the early 2000’s there have been many accounts hearing about the growth of Kpop or the Korean Wave. At this time when many people believe it has reached its peak, it continues to grow and surprise us. Many awards shows have broadcasted special programmes to mark this growth, entertaining new groups and beating records. However, not everyone seems to understand the appeal behind the idealistic manufacture of the genre and how its made it this big all over the world.
The first part of the Korean Wave growth documentary will look at a few general facts about Korea, including the original growth of the k-culture phenomenon. Mentioning a few reasons why its still growing and uncovering some government tactics. It looks into the two main reasons for this growth: K-dramas and Kpop.
The second part will focus on a Kpop trainee academy where young people will go to take lessons in singing, music and dance, giving them the perfect foundations to become a Kpop star. A few of the students and teachers are interviewed on what their aims are and how the school works in regards to the overall industry. It showcases many of the important aspects of becoming a Kpop star whilst at the same time examines what makes Kpop so appealing, that a school like this has been created.
The third part will be looking at a different aspect of the Korean wave venturing outside of South Korea itself and into Europe. Jambinal, a post-rock trio give an alternative appearance to the highly manufactured image of Kpop, and talk about unfair government treatment. They clarify why their music is more popular overseas and how this reflects back on the industry.
The programme has many voices and aspects. By using the original Korean interviews as well as having them voiced over in English it gives the piece a more personal approach and will connect with an interested audience better. There will be sections of voiceover to help guide the piece from one section to another however there will only be one person conducting all the interviews included to give the piece more structure. There will be music played throughout.
