As someone who lives their life vicariously through the characters she sees on screen, Makee shares her personal point of view on the topic of relationships. As someone who spends a lot of time watching TV shows and movies the presenter has arguably been exposed to different narratives of love in almost everything. So what exactly are relationships like and what has her experience been so far in comparison to what she’s seen online?

Long synopsis: Love is blank is an illustrative audio journal created to voice out the presenter’s thoughts on the experience of relationships. As someone who spends a lot of time watching TV shows and movies the presenter arguably been exposed to different narratives of love in almost everything. So what exactly are relationships like and what has my experience been so far in comparison to what I’ve seen online?

With a curated playlist, and a collection of sounds, TV show and movie clips the aim is to express the presenter’s thoughts on what they think they want in a relationship. The presenter also goes through what their experience has been so far. Each song has been chosen to both set the mood of what the presenter’s thoughts are and the lyrics further demonstrate their point. There are elements of expectation versus reality within the final piece.

This piece is an audio collage of the thoughts that goes through the presenter’s head when thinking about relationships.

Treatment

This piece will follow the style of a personalised audio journal. The presenter will introduce and explain the topic with a music bed to set the scene and mood. The music chosen will be carefully intentional and curated as the lyrics in the song further highlight the point the presenter is trying to make. TV show clips and sound effects will used within the piece to emphasise a point the presenter is making. As it will be created for Transmission Roundhouse, there will be a heavy influence of music within the piece. Therefore there will be moments of just music without the presenter, especially towards the end.

As the presenter is talking / narrating her experiences and thoughts on relationships, the first few TV show clips from Friends have been used to illustrate the expectations she has on what it’s like to be in the ideal relationship. The next set of TV show clips taken from The Good Place will be used to demonstrate the reality the presenter is facing.

This theme will be carried through the rest of the piece using clips from Dirty Dancing, as well as music from the movie itself. And finally at the end, the presenter will wrap up her thoughts using sound effects and music lyrics. Finally, transitional sound effects will be used in between the two sections when the presenter talks about TV shows and movies to indicate the change in subject matter.

The final piece should sound like a fusion between a podcast, a TV show, a movie, and a music radio show.

Music report

Name of track: Red bottom sky

Composer: Yung lean

Publishing company (record company): YEAR0001

Year of publication/release: 2017

Name of track: I know there’s gonna be good times (Good times)

Composer: Jamie xx ft Young Thug, Popcaan

Publishing company (record company): Young Turks

Year of publication/release: 2015

Name of track: L-O-V-E

Composer: Nat King Cole

Publishing company (record company): Capitol Records

Year of publication/release: 1965

Name of track: Tiny dancer

Composer: Elton John

Publishing company (record company): DMJ Records and UNI Records

Year of publication/release: 1971

Name of track: Ride

Composer: Twenty One Pilots

Publishing company (record company): Fueled by Ramen

Year of publication/release: 2015

Name of track: (I’ve had) The time of my life

Composer: Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

Publishing company (record company): RCA Records

Year of publication/release: 1987

Name of track: Hungry eyes

Composer: Eric Carmen

Publishing company (record company): RCA Records

Year of publication/release: 1987

Name of track: Be my baby

Composer: The Ronettes

Publishing company (record company): Philles 116

Year of publication/release: 1963

Name of track: Love is strange

Composer: Mickey and Sylvia

Publishing company (record company): Groove

Year of publication/release: 1956

Name of track: Aftermath

Composer: SZA

Publishing company (record company): Unknown (Found on Soundcloud)

Year of publication/release: 2013

Name of track: Where did the love go?

Composer: Bipolar Sunshine

Publishing company (record company): Polydor Ltd

Year of publication/release: 2014

Name of track: Heartbeats

Composer: Jose Gonzalez

Publishing company (record company): Peacefrog Records

Year of publication/release: 2008

Name of track: Bliss city

Composer: ODIE

Publishing company (record company): Unite Recordings / EMPIRE

Year of publication/release: 2018

ALL SFX USED WHERE SOURCED FROM BBC SOUND EFFECT ARCHIVE AND SOUNDBIBLE

Commission

https://blog.westminster.ac.uk/radio/wp-content/uploads/sites/65/2019/12/Final-Audio-Project_mixdown-1.mp3

Image

If you’ve ever wondered what goes on in my head when it comes to love and relationships, now’s your chance 😉 I’ve made a personalized audio journal talking through all my feelings, through the lens of my favorite movies and TV shows –
