{"id":1847,"date":"2020-07-22T15:48:39","date_gmt":"2020-07-22T15:48:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/recordsandarchives.westminster.ac.uk\/?page_id=1847"},"modified":"2020-07-22T15:48:39","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T15:48:39","slug":"airraids","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/recordsandarchives\/ww2\/airraids\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Raids"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"1847\" class=\"elementor elementor-1847\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e654f55 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e654f55\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1dcfbde\" data-id=\"1dcfbde\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a423462 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a423462\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5><h5><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">With the arrival of war came the threat of aerial bombardment by the German Luftwaffe.\u00a0 Whilst this threat had never been particularly significant during World War One, this time round it was very real.\u00a0 London braced itself in 1939 and what later became known as the &#8216;Phoney War&#8217; began.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t until September 1940 that The Blitz actually started.\u00a0\u00a0Nevertheless, the Polytechnic took every precaution to protect its people and build<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">ings.<\/span><\/h5><div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5668b5b\" data-id=\"5668b5b\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8a6d024 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8a6d024\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-74ea5f1\" data-id=\"74ea5f1\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff03480 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ff03480\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>The Polytechnic Magazine<\/em> of May 1945 reflected that,<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8216;This period of grace was used to the fullest advantage, shelter rooms being equipped in the basements of the buildings, regular evacuation drills from the classrooms to the shelters being performed and a complete voluntary service of shelter marshals, fire-fighters and first aid attendants being recruited from all sections of the staff, under the direction of Major W. B. Marchant, who had accepted the onerous duties of A.R.P. [Air Raid Precaution] Officer.<\/em><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The value of this organisation was apparent when the schools\u00a0resumed in September 1940 after the summer vacation. We\u00a0were, at that time, at the peak of the daylight attacks and it is\u00a0no exaggeration to say that far more time was spent in the\u00a0shelters during that Autumn Term than in the classrooms&#8230;<\/em><em>In this way the\u00a0work of the schools continued to function and, except for a\u00a0period of a few days when the Extension building [Little Titchfield Street] was closed\u00a0owing to the presence of a D.A. bomb in the immediate neighbourhood, there was no other break, and great credit is due to\u00a0the staff A.R.P. organisation, whose vigilance and preparedness\u00a0under trying, and often dangerous, conditions, did so much to\u00a0help maintain the smooth working of the Institute as a whole&#8217;.<\/em><\/p><p>Members of the Polytechnic were involved in Air Raid Precaution duties and from August 1940 a volunteer Fire Guard scheme was established.\u00a0 Each nightly duty consisted of three men.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Both the Regent Street and Little Titchfield Street buildings escaped unscathed but the bombs came remarkably close, even landing on the buildings on occasion.\u00a0 The <em>Magazine<\/em> of May 1945 notes that\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8216;Fortunately, the only direct hits on\u00a0either building were by incendiary bombs, which were adequately\u00a0dealt with by the squads before any large fire resulted, although\u00a0it is worthy of recording that the Extension building squad\u00a0took advantage of a large oil bomb on a house opposite the\u00a0building to put their fire fighting training to practical test, and,\u00a0after some twenty minutes of the real stuff, managed to get the\u00a0fire under control before the N.F.S. arrived to complete the\u00a0good work.&#8217;<\/em><\/p><p>Other bombs did serious damage to neighbouring buildings.\u00a0 The Queen&#8217;s Hall, 100 yards from 309 Regent Street, was bombed beyond repair.\u00a0 Sadly, an 11 year old pupil of the Polytechnic Secondary School, Peter Panting, and his mother were killed when a\u00a0further bomb fell on Great Titchfield Street.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Quintin Hogg Memorial Sportsground at Chiswick was not so fortunate and suffered severe damage.\u00a0 In April 1944, bombs destroyed the ladies&#8217; pavilion. The boathouse was badly damaged and all the boats burnt.\u00a0 Other structures sustained blast damage and the sports pitches were hit.\u00a0 In July 1944, a V1 flying bomb destroyed the groundsman&#8217;s flat.\u00a0 In <em>The Polytechnic Magazine<\/em> of March 1944, it was remarked that football matches were taking place on &#8216;pitches pitted with incendiary bomb holes&#8217;.\u00a0 In total, seven high explosive bombs and hundreds of incendiary bombs fell on or near the sportsground.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a31e969 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a31e969\" data-element_type=\"section\"
