21 February<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nBattle of Verdun begins \u2013 the longest and costliest battle of the war.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1 July<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nBattle of the Somme begins \u2013 the British outnumber the Germans but 7 British die to every 1 German. The total number of British casualties on the first day is 60,000.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
18 November<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nBattle of the Somme ends with a total of over 1 million casualties sustained during the battle.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
