University Records & Archives welcomes enquiries from academics who would like to teach with our collections. Hands-on experience with collections helps students to develop confident research skills and to understand the wide range of resources that are available to them, both within the University and across London. We work with you to design a session that will best meet the learning objectives for your class, using material that will be of interest to your students. This can be anything from a introduction to archive resources to helping you use our collections for your module.<\/p>\n

Our collections are very broad and so you will be amazed at what we might be able to find! Strengths include photography, sport (including the Olympics), travel, town planning, workwear, architecture, the People\u2019s Republic of China, illustrated books, Victorian science, men\u2019s fashion,<\/span> and left-wing student politics. Even where our collections are not closely aligned to your subject area, we can help students gain experience in using archives to prepare them for research elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>

Yes! We encourage students to think creatively about the primary sources they might want to use, and how to interpret them. We try to bring a broad range of material \u2013 photographs, garments, handwritten documents and printed ephemera \u2013 to each class.<\/p>

We can bring a small amount of archive material to any of the University\u2019s campuses \u2013 usually one box<\/span>,<\/span> an A1 portfolio<\/span> or 2 garments<\/span>. <\/span>Sessions involving a larger quantity of material will need to take place at either Little Titchfield Street (we can advise on which rooms are best to book) or at the Westminster Menswear Archive in Harrow, depending on which collection you are using.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We can supervise sessions of up to <\/span>25<\/span> students with one member of archive staff. For larger class sizes we usually recommend splitting the class into several smaller groups.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As soon as possible <\/span>– a<\/span>ll archive sessions must be supervised by a member of the University Records & Archives team, and so are subject to staff availability. We operate on a first-come, first-served basis so the sooner you contact us, the more likely we are to be able to come at your chosen time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We regularly welcome student groups from external Universities, particularly to look at the China Visual Arts Project Archive and the Westminster Menswear Archive. Visits from external groups are charged at \u00a3250 to cover staff time and room hire.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
