{"id":910,"date":"2020-10-20T07:45:44","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T07:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/researchoffice\/?p=910"},"modified":"2020-10-20T07:45:44","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T07:45:44","slug":"make-your-practice-based-arts-research-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/researchoffice\/make-your-practice-based-arts-research-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Make your practice-based arts research open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We recognise that research in practice-based arts has qualities unique to the range of disciplines encompassed in this area \u2013 from fine and performing arts to architecture and design. These include recognition that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you create a dynamic, changing body (portfolio\/collection) of work<\/li>\n<li>your research isn\u2019t necessarily \u2018funded\u2019 (so often isn\u2019t included in funder open access policies nor the associated funding)<\/li>\n<li>you face unique Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright challenges in sharing your work<\/li>\n<li>your research isn\u2019t necessarily captured (or preserved) elsewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As such when we re-developed <a href=\"https:\/\/westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk\">WestminsterResearch<\/a> our open source institutional repository we worked with researchers in the<u><a title=\"https:\/\/cream.ac.uk\/\" href=\"https:\/\/cream.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media (CREAM)<\/a><\/u> and <u><a title=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/research\/groups-and-centres\/experimental-practice-research-group\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/research\/groups-and-centres\/experimental-practice-research-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Experimental Practice<\/a><\/u> to better reflect how you see your research.<\/p>\n<p>Enhancements we made include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>updating our output type options to include artefact, composition, design, digital or visual media, exhibition or performance<\/li>\n<li>templates that now include both creator (not author) and collaborator roles and the recognition that there may be a commissioning body (rather than publisher)<\/li>\n<li>the option to identify a media type within each record (rather than it being seen as an &#8216;output type&#8217;)<\/li>\n<li>the ability to apply access levels to files which recognises that there may be IP or copyright reasons that a file cannot be made open (and the development of a <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.westminster.ac.uk\/copyrightresearchers\">guide to copyright for researcher<\/a> to help support you in making your work open).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is also now possible to create a portfolio (or collection) which means you can connect up (for example) multiple image records, an exhibition record and perhaps an exhibition catalogue together. This recognises that the documentation (or research data) is a core part of telling the story of practice-based arts research.<\/p>\n<p>See Julie Marsh&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk\/item\/q9y33\/assembly-performing-the-materiality-of-muslim-prayer-spaces\">Assembly: performing the materiality of Muslim prayer spaces<\/a> for a great example of how a portfolio can look.<\/p>\n<p>Adding your research to WestminsterResearch also allows you to make it Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable (see the <u><a title=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/sdata201618\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/sdata201618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FAIR principles<\/a><\/u> for more information) by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>enabling you to request a DOI for outputs not published elsewhere (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/research\/researcher-support\/research-data\/preserving-and-sharing-data\/creating-a-doi-in-the-vre\">Creating a DOI in the VRE<\/a> for more information)<\/li>\n<li>conforming to international standards for discoverability and interoperability<\/li>\n<li>enabling you to assign an appropriate licence (where possible) to enable re-use (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.westminster.ac.uk\/copyrightresearchers\/creativecommons\">Creative Commons<\/a>\u00a0for more information on using these licenses).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So ultimately \u2013 sharing you research in WestminsterResearch enables you to maintain the connection between the different parts and makes it as discoverable and re-usable as possible.
