Can’t come to Russia? Russia comes to you!

Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre is bringing Chekhov plays to the Barbican, and there only here for five days.

Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre is going to arrive in London from 5th – 9th February 2019. Under its Artistic Director Evgeny Pisarev it is going to be a season for lovers of Chekhov, Brecht and Aitmatov. Three epic, poignant stories would be brought to life during a short period of time: The Cherry Orchard, The Good Person of Szechwan plus a new performance without words Mother’s Field.

The Theatre arrives in London with this programme for the first time specially for the Barbican festival. Ani Arutunyan, the theatre press secretary says:

“All of the special requisite would be brought specifically for these acts from Moscow. We can’t say for sure if this tour would be repeated in the future, but we will do everything we can to return back to London in the nearest future for our dear English-speaking audience.”

The Cherry Orchard: Is an enigmatic, soulful production of Chekhov’s masterpiece. Lyubov Ranevskaya returns to her estate when she learns her beloved orchard is to be sold off to repay debts. During her stay she starts to be haunted by her son, Misha, who is given a physical presence on the stage. He haunts the drama as the impending sale and destruction of the cherry orchard become inevitable.

The Good Person of Szechwan: Is a drama brought by Brecht. The Gods came down on Earth to search for a good person and finds Shen Te, a sex worker, who lets them stay for the night. Being amused by her help they decide to reward her, enabling her to buy a tobacco shop and turn her life around. But being good and poor is not easy, so Shen Te’s generosity leads the invention a non-existent cousin Shui Ta, who is pragmatic enough to guess everyone’s exploitative schemes.

Mothers Field: is based on an enduring story by Soviet-Kyrgyz writer, Chingiz Aitmatov. A strong woman Tolgani, searches for the special connection with the Mother Earth. Granted a healthy family, her bounty is lost to misfortune when war intervenes. Back in her beloved fields her heart is torn apart by the grief.
