How the Spice Girls made history

Spice Girls on tour 2016 media.melty

In light of the popular 90’s girl group announcing they’re doing a reunion tour next year, as well as feminism becoming a common topic among young girls, VOL looked at what the Spice Girls did to become such a legendary group.

Back in the 90’s there weren’t many successful girl bands, but somehow the Spice Girls pulled it off against all odds, resulting in a massive 80 million records being sold worldwide. Not only have they done huge-selling records, but they also toured all over the world, including the United States, Canada, Asia and all over Europe.

Their worldwide success came from their 1996 Wannabe release when it hit number one in 37 countries. The hit gave them a huge platform, really pushing their music into the spotlight. They had so much success that they are still considered to be the best-selling female group of all time, having sold 85 million records worldwide.

Not only was their music massively popular, but their release of Spiceworld: The Movie broke the record for the highest-ever grossing weekend debut on the Super Bowl weekend, in the US. A massive $10.5 million was made through box office sales.

The movie proposed to share the charisma and spirit of what it took to be a Spice Girl, which clearly it did otherwise… who are the Spice Girls? The movie was extremely successful, putting the group on the musical map and it was nominated for several awards. It even won an award for… Worst Actress.

But we don’t just love them for the feel-good tunes or acting skills they shared with us almost 25 years ago.

So, what do we love about them? Their vibrant personalities of course.

We saw each member’s personality jump through the screens of our TV’s all those years ago. Everyone had their favourite member and friends would choose who they were most like.

The group gave young girls the ‘permission’ to be who they wanted to be and not conform to ideas of what a woman should be. Each member’s personality shaped their style and attitude, allowing girls of the 90’s to connect with them on a deeper level. They weren’t just another girl band.

Confidence and strength were the two biggest traits all the members brought to life, embodying ‘girl power’. They stood for women working together to reach success instead of tearing each other down.

Though the famous five became the famous three, they are now back as a foursome, Mel B, Mel C, Emma, Geri, to tour the UK. Unfortunately, previous attempts at a reunion haven’t gone to plan, but we shan’t dwell on that considering how they made history for female groups.

Even though Victoria Beckham a.k.a Posh Spice won’t be joining the reunion, she wished her four ex-band members well in her post on Instagram:

Can they pull it off this time around?
