After that, in 1981, Women’s rights activists commemorated their death on November 25th as a day to raise awareness of gender-based violence. On 20th December 1993, the General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, paving the way for the elimination of violence against women and girls worldwide.

On February 7th, 2000, they officially designating 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and in the process invited governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations to work together to participate in and organize public awareness-raising events that are conducted annually on that date, the UN reports.
