Popular Twitch streamer Hasan Piker banned from Twitch for a “malicious” copyright claim

The Twitch streamer and political commentator, Hasan Piker, 31, also known as HasanAbi, was banned from the streaming platform Twitch.com due to a copyright strike.

Piker was banned in the middle of a stream on 6 December for showing a clip of the right-wing subscription channel Censored.TV on his stream. The political commentator was dissecting the clip which led Censored.TV to issue a copyright claim that Piker tweeted to his 1,2 million Twitter followers.

The popular left-wing streamer will be banned from Twitch for 48 hours until 8 December. The 31-year-old Piker found the copyright claim to be issued “maliciously” and with political intent, claiming on his Instagram story that “Nazis took down my channel on Twitch for copyright as I was criticizing them lying abt how they support free speech”.

Piker’s over two million Twitch followers expressed their disappointment on Twitter:

This is the fourth time Piker has been banned from the platform – previously for reasons such as using the word ‘cracker’ and controversial comments about 9/11. However, this is the first time the streamer has been banned for a copyright claim.

The Turkish-American streamer got his start on the American news commentary show The Young Turks and began his streaming career in 2018. The streamer has become extremely popular among young people ever since and recently won the award for the best news streamer at The Youtube Streamy Awards 2022.
