Three Christmas markets to visit this festive season

Christmas markets are the highlight of December and spread joy on the streets of London. As more small businesses are opening their own each year, it is worth noting which stands are the most popular, as shareholders claim food and beverage stalls to be the most profitable.

This year there is a noticeable increase in food and beverage-related stalls, over half sell desserts including the classic pancakes, waffles and churros, and suffer from the longest cues compared to the rest.

Storeholders reported that stall competition is growing, and people are looking to bring originality to the products they sell, while others will make twice as much as them just by selling mulled wine.

“Many of us strive to bring unique products which would attract customers; we put a lot of effort into our craft. However most of my competition sells desserts and warm drinks, I think people visiting like the idea of enjoying a nice hot chocolate while they look around at the different stalls.”

“Most people prefer to browse and don’t come with the intention to buy anything, the only thing that would tempt them enough would be grabbing a few bites, and not so much purchasing ornaments.”

Nevertheless, there is still a diverse range of activities and events to take on.

Below is a list of the top three Christmas markets worth visiting this December.

  1. Trafalgar Square market

Trafalgar Square is one of the most tourist packed squares in London; full of historical monuments to commemorate the British victory in the battle of Trafalgar, against the Spanish and French fleets.

During this time, one of the main attractions is the famous Christmas tree, a 68-foot Norway spruce put up yearly, in a ceremony thanking the UK for its support during World War II.

When the end of the year approaches, the square plays host to several events and activities to bring people together for the festive season. One of which is their yearly Christmas market, open from 11 November until 2 January 2023.

It is packed with German-style wooden stalls, selling collectables, Christmas stocking fillers, and a variety of desserts and beverages.

2. Covent Garden market

Covent Garden is known for its fun packed market, but during the winter season, it turns into Christmas heaven.

This is one of the public’s favourites due to its enchanting decorations, including baubles, thousands of mini lights, and as of this year, a new Christmas sleigh for families to take photos with.

Storeholders compete against one another to sell various goods such as jewellery, warm beverages, crafts, and more.

Aside from its winter theme stalls, Covent Garden hosts various events and activities to keep up the festive spirit.

This year there will be a Dolce & Gabbana pop up in the piazza, where Londoners will be able to take Instagrammable pictures, take advantage of a wide variety of treats, as well as find D&G branded gift ideas.

The market is open from 11 am until midnight and will stand until 3 January 2023.

3. Leicester square market

This is one of London’s most populated districts, surrounded by numerous activities and historical statues to admire whilst passing by the stalls.

Visitors can grab a hot chocolate, enjoy seasonal treats, and cherish the festive lights.

This is a family-friendly market in which visitors will be able to compete in a range of tactical mini-games in exchange for a reward such as stuffed animals and Christmas-themed toys and ornaments.

At the end of their visit, the public can end their night by watching local events featuring a Comedy Club, Cabaret show and even a baby disco.

The market is open from 9 November 2022 until 8 January 2023 and entrance is free, however additional events will come with an extra cost.
