If you don’t enjoy blood and guts, then here are the top five non-gory horror films which will still scare you.

5) Misery

This psychological thriller is based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King. A writer finds himself in the care of his biggest fan after he gets involved in a car accident. However, things take a turn for the worst when this fan reveals her true colours after finding out the ending to her favourite book. Featuring an Oscar-winning performance by Kathy Bates, this film will leave you feeling claustrophobic.

4) Paranormal Activity

This found-footage film is destined to keep you awake at night. It follows a young couple who are being terrorised by something at night, so decide to set up cameras to capture the evidence. What they find is terrifying.

3) The Babadook

A 2014 Australian horror, this film is about a young mother struggling to raise her son after the death of her husband. When the young boy comes across a picture book about a monster called a Babadook, strange things start happening, and the mother realises that the monster is real.

2) Berlin Syndrome

Although this is more of a thriller, it is still a horrifying film. Directed by Cate Shortland, Berlin Syndrome follows a young photographer (Teresa Palmer), who’s holiday romance with a teacher takes a turn for the worse as he holds her captive in his apartment. This is a heartbreaking and tense film.

1) Carrie (1976)

Another film based on a Stephen King book appears on this list. It focuses on a young girl called Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) who realises she has telekinetic powers and what happens when she is humiliated at prom. It is a Halloween classic.
