{"id":11593,"date":"2016-11-11T12:31:10","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T12:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=11593"},"modified":"2016-11-11T12:31:10","modified_gmt":"2016-11-11T12:31:10","slug":"national-geographic-afghan-girl-deported-from-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/national-geographic-afghan-girl-deported-from-pakistan\/","title":{"rendered":"National Geographic &#8216;Afghan girl&#8217; deported from Pakistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Subject of the\u00a0magazine&#8217;s\u00a0July 1985 cover\u00a0convicted for having false ID papers.<\/h3>\n<h3>Reporter: James Brookes | Sub-Editor: Yasmin Jeffery<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_9549\" style=\"width: 701px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9549\" class=\"wp-image-9549 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2016\/10\/efdedww-691x1024.jpg\" alt=\"efdedww\" width=\"691\" height=\"1024\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve McCurry photographed Sharbut Gula in a Pakistani refugee camp in 1985, and her portrait went on to become one of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century I (National Geographic)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sharbut Gula, the &#8220;Afghan girl with green eyes&#8221;, has been deported to Afghanistan\u00a0after a court in Peshawar, northern Pakistan ruled\u00a0she was in the country illegally.\u00a0After being treated for hepatitis C in hospital, she\u00a0was handed over to Afghan authorities at the border along with her children.<\/p>\n<p>A senior security official in Pakistan told Reuters: &#8220;We took Sharbat Gula from the hospital in a convoy and delivered her to the Afghan border authorities at Torkham.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gula\u00a0met with Afghan president\u00a0Ashraf Ghani in Kabul, whose spokesperson later confirmed the government had provided housing for her\u00a0and her family.<\/p>\n<p>Officials <a href=\"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/afghan-girl-from-infamous-1985-national-geographic-cover-arrested-in-pakistan-over-false-papers-charge\/\">raided Gula&#8217;s\u00a0home late last month<\/a>, after a photo from her\u00a0computerised national identity card was published. After pleading guilty to all charges, she\u00a0served\u00a0a 15-day prison sentence and was ordered to pay 110,000 rupees (\u00a3871).<\/p>\n<p>Champa Patel, Amnesty International&#8217;s south Asia director, has condemned the ruling:\u00a0\u201cPakistan\u2019s decision to deport Sharbat Gula is a grave injustice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By sending her back to a country she hasn\u2019t seen in a generation, her plight has become emblematic of Pakistan\u2019s cruel treatment of Afghan refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k3foVVAh_6s]<\/p>\n<p>Deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan has seen thousands of refugees deported from the country in recent months. Pakistan\u2019s National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) estimates\u00a0that over 60,000 identity cards have\u00a0been illegally obtained by foreign nationals\u00a0since the country&#8217;s war with the Soviet Union in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Gula&#8217;s haunting portrait, taken by photographer Steve McCurry in 1985, went on to become\u00a0one of the most recognisable magazine covers ever.<\/p>\n<p>After she was detained, McCurry\u00a0blasted Pakistani authorities on Instagram, calling her arrest &#8220;an egregious violation of her human rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The photographer provided financial and legal support to Gula and her family before her deportation, hiring a human rights lawyer in a bid to secure her release.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/VoiceofLDNarts\">@VoiceofLDNarts<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Subject of the\u00a0magazine&#8217;s\u00a0July 1985 cover\u00a0convicted for having false ID papers.
