{"id":12432,"date":"2016-11-16T12:30:56","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T12:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=12432"},"modified":"2016-11-16T12:30:56","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T12:30:56","slug":"inside-oto-a-sexual-perspective-people-need-to-hear-right-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/inside-oto-a-sexual-perspective-people-need-to-hear-right-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside OTO: A Sexual Perspective People Need to Hear Right Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The religious organisation, <a href=\"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/inside-oto-a-religious-organisation-using-sex-magick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ordo Templi Orients <\/a>, is\u00a0noted for its practice of Aleister Crowley\u2019s, Sex Magick through its membership and initiations.<br \/>\nReporter:\u00a0Gabrielle Espinet |\u00a0Subeditor:\u00a0Lateefa Farah<\/h3>\n<p>A woman is impregnated at an altar. \u00a0Another is participating in intercourse with the involvement of menstrual blood. \u00a0Some are adoring the phallus. \u00a0The male is spitting saliva whilst mixing sexual fluids. \u00a0This is not a porno; it is Ordo Templi Orientis, a religious organisation that practices the science of Aleister Crowley&#8217;s teachings and integrates his theories in their membership process. \u00a0Coitus is a controversial topic, especially when practiced in a group setting. \u00a0Is this why Ordo Templi Orientis is cited a concern over the practice of Sex Magick?<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0contacted spokesman Etienne Howess of London\u2019s Cult Centre and he explained he and his colleagues are aware of Ordo Templi Orientis.\u00a0 \u201cIt would be a group about which we are concerned.\u00a0 If you got someone involved in the group, then they are going to need some help.\u201d\u00a0 He ended saying, \u201cthis particular group tends to be on the occult end of things as opposed to anything else\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>[soundcloud url=&#8221;https:\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/293291191&#8243; params=&#8221;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&#8221; width=&#8221;100%&#8221; height=&#8221;166&#8243; iframe=&#8221;true&#8221; \/]<\/p>\n<p>Is it acceptable to discriminate against OTO\u2019s religious practices? If so, does their practice of Sex Magick have anything to do with it? \u00a0The more I thought about it, the more I asked myself why the public is concerned with OTO\u2019s interaction with Sexual Magick.<\/p>\n<p>Sex is a culture that glorifies human desires, so why do we regard sex with this organisation in a negative light?\u00a0 Is it because it is public and associated with multiple people?\u00a0 If so, this raises concerns on our perspectives of sex and its industry.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the sex industry is triggering because we immediately associate prostitution and sex trafficking with this.\u00a0 We\u2019re dealing with people saying you\u2019re selling your body. \u00a0Sex work is seen as degrading and isn\u2019t accepted outside most societies.\u00a0 Some reject it legally and religiously.<\/p>\n<p>But the sex industry can be viewed in two ways.<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left\">\n<li>People are in it by choice or circumstance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 AND\/OR<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">The sex industry is exploitative and a form of gender-based violence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I spoke to an Irish member of the community. \u00a0She told me that it is a common misconception that Ordo Templi Orientis is some kind of sex cult. \u00a0She continued, &#8220;the concept of Sex Magick is\u00a0<strong>not\u00a0<\/strong>about performing Sex Magick with other people (though some do that in their private business), it is about attuning to your divine power which is the basis of all creation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She spoke casually about the organisation\u2019s methodology and theology.\u00a0 After reading, most people might find themselves in a web of unacceptable behavior or obscured societal norms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Sex is a fundamental human right. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are so many ways to be intimate and OTO finds enlightenment through access\/pleasure of the body.\u00a0 It is healing and regarded as the way to one\u2019s Will. \u00a0And you know what?\u00a0 There\u2019s a dichotomy to it; you say you\u2019re a hooker and all of the sudden you\u2019re considered inhumane.\u00a0 But truthfully, these acts and services are how people self-identify.<\/p>\n<p>Sex work automatically produces a condemning mind that shifts from \u2018whores\u2019 to \u2018drugs\u2019 and establishes a generic image of criminalisation. \u00a0And as politics, behavior, and everything in between has taught us, this consensus derives from the media. \u00a0However, to members of OTO\u2019s society, it\u2019s a choice.\u00a0 What\u2019s happening is a service is being provided.\u00a0 These people are choosing to participate in an activity that a majority of the population does.\u00a0\u00a0 Sex is essential.\u00a0 It is just as important as air and water.<\/p>\n<p>Sex Magick is serving OTO\u2019s community.\u00a0 It has a function and it helps (prospective) members to fulfill their Will.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">So should people be allowed to create a stigma of OTO, when we all participate in our own personal kinks?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The religious organisation, Ordo Templi Orients , is\u00a0noted for its practice of Aleister Crowley\u2019s, Sex Magick through its membership and initiations.
