Along with the London Film Festival, the two events shed a light on the importance of female representation.<\/h3>\n<p>The 12<sup>th<\/sup> edition of the Rome Film Festival opened on October 26<sup>th<\/sup> and will end on November 5<sup>th <\/sup>. With the longest red carpet in the world and a star-studded line up it has become a key event leading up to the Oscars.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16828\" style=\"width: 2458px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16828\" class=\"wp-image-16828 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/11\/IMG_9370-e1509713062850.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2448\" height=\"3264\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The beginning of the red carpet, where fan queue for hours.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Source: Lavinia Petrucci<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last year the festival had opened with Barry Jenkins\u2019<em> Moonlight<\/em>, this year the first premiere was Scott Copper\u2019s <em>Hostiles<\/em>, an alternative western set in 1892 starring Rosamund Pike and Wes Studi.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/DroVvVRFBfw<\/p>\n<p>Jake Gyllenhaal presented <em>Stronger<\/em>, a David Gordon Green film about Jeff Bauman. Source: Vanity Fair<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other presented films are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Oscar winning Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s <em>Detroit<\/em>, about the riots that took place there and lasted five days in 1967.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Detroit Trailer Final Trailer (2017) | Movieclips Trailers\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Te0L3xUA8wI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y-FuSuWienM\">The Party<\/a> by Sally Potter, a black and white comedy starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Timothy Spall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>David Lynch was awarded a career award given by Paolo Sorrentino, who won Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 Academy Awards with \u201cThe Great Beauty\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16911\" style=\"width: 2458px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16911\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16911\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/11\/IMG_9377-e1509717332808.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2448\" height=\"3264\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Lavinia Petrucci<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Within 39 feature films and documentaries, more than 30 countries were represented. The atmosphere of the eternal city helps and the setting is a work of art itself; in fact, the Parco Della Musica was designed by the extraordinary architect Renzo Piano, who also designed the Shard and a part of the Pompidou Centre in Paris.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16934\" style=\"width: 2458px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16934\" class=\"wp-image-16934 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/11\/IMG_9382.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2448\" height=\"1320\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A lot of students get the chance to go to various screenings.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Source: Lavinia Petrucci<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Alice in the City, a parallel film festival which is three years older than the main one, focuses on youth and family films.<\/p>\n<p>Its winner for best film was the Austrian Adrian Goiginger&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dGqDVKQC19A\">The Best of All Worlds<\/a>,<\/em>the story about a drug addict who tries to e a good mother to her son. Alessandro, one of the students who attended the premiere, told us: &#8220;It was very intense, you feel like you are being transported into something very heavy and distressing, but this is because of the situations being shown. I felt dizzy after it ended.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The festival saw <a href=\"http:\/\/newsok.com\/italy-rome-film-festival-please-stand-by-red-carpet\/article\/feed\/1489927\">Dakota Fanning<\/a> presenting <em>Please Stand By<\/em>. The Ben Lewin film sees Dakota Fanning playing an autistic girl who runs away from San Francisco to Los Angeles for a script writing contest. This edition of the festival focuses on women, its co-curator Gianluca Giannelli, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/features\/italian-cinema-focus-previewing-the-2017-rome-film-festival-and-mia\/5123409.article\">ScreenDaily<\/a>: \u201cAt least four out of 10 of our movies are either directed by women, written by women, or about female issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A similar reasoning was behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/whatson.bfi.org.uk\/lff\/Online\/default.asp\">BFI London Festival <\/a>choices. What was put at the center of the attention was including amazing performances from older actresses.<\/p>\n<p>The 61<sup>st<\/sup> edition of the British festival took place in Leicester Square and other local cinemas during the first two weeks of October.<\/p>\n<p>The Festival director, Clare Stewart stressed the importance of having female roles both on screen and behind the camera. She told the BBC that \u201cstrong women is obviously still a key focus for us\u201d and this can be seen in the numbers. A quarter of the 246 shown over the course of the 12 days are directed by women.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of Best Film in Rome was Janus Metz Pedersen\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IgfFdEOGUqE&amp;vl=en\"> Borg McEnroe<\/a>, which portrays the true story of the tennis rivalry between Bj\u00f6rn Borg and John McEnroe. Even if another biographical tennis focused film, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WMdzBwsZRX8\">Battle of Sexes<\/a>, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell was presented at the London Film Festival it did not win the biggest prize. Andrey Zvyaginstev\u2019s Loveless was named best film instead.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these festivals giving importance to women roles and true stories is reflective of a climate that desperately needs change and a long overdue representation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many of the film that were presented at this festival in the past went on to win Oscars, some past winners include <em>Dallas Buyers Club<\/em>, <em>The Social Network<\/em> and <em>Moonlight<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In a couple of months we will find out how many of the films presented this year will be the protagonists of the upcoming awards season.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Words: Lavinia Petrucci | Subbing: Marija Tomsone Rome Film Festival is bringing Hollywood stars to the Italian capital to present films that will have an important spot at the approaching Awards Season.
