Some views raise the question: is it the effect of Brexit and growing racism? <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult question, what to do\u201d, says my Uber driver with a great level of concern, when I asked him about his future plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It took all of us by great surprise when, on September 22, Transport For London (TFL) announced that they were no longer planning to extend Uber\u2019s license after it was deemed to be \u201cunfit\u201d to operate in London. Over 3.5 million Londoners rely on the transportation app for the quick, hassle-free and affordable ride. And, for thousands of others, it is a main source of income.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Uber is currently in the appeal process and has urged Londoners to sign a petition called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Save Your Uber in London<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The city is divided. Some people are furious as more and more serious allegations against Uber drivers are coming into light. Uber has been accused of irresponsibly addressing criminal offences, mishandling background checks and alleged sexual assault complaints. But the company claims \u201csafety is key \u2013 our technology uses GPS to track and share a record of your exact trip with you\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16988\" style=\"width: 593px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16988\" class=\"wp-image-16988 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/11\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-03-at-2.59.11-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"583\" height=\"106\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Twitter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The result of Brexit?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nauman Naeem, a part-time driver who has been working for Uber for over a year and a half, thinks that this ban will do no favour to a busy city like London. \u201cI think it\u2019s just a political game,\u201d he says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it\u2019s a stupid decision that the government is making. You can\u2019t ban Uber in London. It\u2019s a big city, people need Uber in London.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the interview, he expressed his concerns about his future, as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">his fellow drivers. \u00a0We can only wonder if this ban is the result Brexit, or some other, much deeper issue. The British people voted to leave the EU, because they felt it was time to say \u201cenough\u201d. Enough of British traditions and values being neglected, enough of British people being undermined by other cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FkupSAcNofA&amp;w=560&amp;h=315]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we were talking, Nauman mentioned that he has not heard of any serious incidents, that might have led the TFL to ban Uber, but points out that \u201cthere are good and bad people everywhere\u201d. A number of Uber drivers are foreigners. How<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ever, the demographic statistics show it all in an int<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">eresting perspective<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. According to th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/content.tfl.gov.uk\/taxi-and-phv-demographic-stats.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TFL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the majority of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> London Taxi (Black Cab) drivers are white British, middle aged and male.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17531\" style=\"width: 1196px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"S\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17531\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17531\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/11\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-08-at-4.08.24-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1186\" height=\"650\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: TFL<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Demographic statistics for Private Hire drivers (PHV), that include companies like Uber, is indeed significantly different. Only 7000 indicate themselves as White British, whereas the rest of the majority, indicated as British from a different origin or White Other, suggesting they might be immigrants from other European countries. That said, it raises a question whether the license ban is another outcome of Brexit? Or is this just one of the ways TFL and the Black Cabs are attempting to take back their country and traditions?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No shock that Black Cabs are not big fans of Uber. Numerous cases of racial discrimination towards Uber drivers worldwide emerged in the past. The most recent being a series of tweets by Laura Loomer, an investigative journalist and far-right activist who sparked outrage after making openly racist comments on Twitter. How can we expect transparency from fellow journalists? Laura Loomer has now been banned from ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft but showed no sympathy since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17005\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17005\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17005\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/11\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-03-at-3.12.19-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"117\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Twitter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recently, The London Taxi Company attempted to trademark the shape of London\u2019s traditional Black Cabs. However, this has been denied by the Appeal Court, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/nov\/01\/black-cab-shape-not-distinctive-enough-to-be-trademark-say-judges\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ruled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as \u201cnot distinctive enough to be trademarked\u201d. This shows the respect they have for the traditional cars and their image. However, holding onto traditions creates difficulties such as the inability to track your journey, contact your driver or get a refund.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a great chance that, even if Uber won\u2019t win this fight, there will be a new innovative company that will try to offer their services to the people of London.
