{"id":17120,"date":"2017-11-04T16:24:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-04T16:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=17120"},"modified":"2017-11-04T16:24:04","modified_gmt":"2017-11-04T16:24:04","slug":"universities-sign-petition-against-governments-request-to-provide-data-about-brexit-lessons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/universities-sign-petition-against-governments-request-to-provide-data-about-brexit-lessons\/","title":{"rendered":"Professors refuse to give the government information on Brexit lessons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Academics refuse to give Government information on what they are teaching students about Brexit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Academics sent out a petition to the\u00a0Minister\u00a0of State for\u00a0Universities after Tory MP and government whip Chris Heaton-Harris asked all UK universities for a list of teachers\u2019 names who teach about Brexit, as well as for details about what is being taught.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving the enquiry\u00a0in a letter addressed by the House of Commons, Prof. Brooks, the Dean of Durham Law School, decided to start a petition and managed to gather nearly 2,4000 signatures within a week.<\/p>\n<p>He was concerned that \u201cwhile all North East universities quickly refused to provide the information\u201d others would feel obliged to respond to the MP\u2019s request, declared on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/news\/north-east-news\/brexit-letter-petition-demands-government-13851768\"><em>Chronicle Live<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/thom_brooks\/status\/922746674753298434<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Prof. Brooks urged the Minister to clarify the Government&#8217;s position on the issue, because \u201cwhile neither the Prime Minister nor her minister appears to support Heaton-Harris\u2019s request, both have not made clear to universities they can disregard the letter if they wish.\u201d Therefore, &#8220;we\u2019re looking for the government to draw a line under it,\u201d he told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/news\/north-east-news\/brexit-letter-petition-demands-government-13851768\">publication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The petition was sent out on Thursday morning urging Mr Johnson to inform every university&#8217;s vice-chancellor that they are not bound to release the information; and that the Tory MP\u2019s request can be ignored if the university wishes to do so.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/thom_brooks\/status\/926744889840168960<\/p>\n<p>The data appeared to be requested for research purposes, but academics saw it as an attempt to limit freedom of speech.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Patten, Chancellor of Oxford University and former Conservative chairman, said that the letter should be thrown in the bin. My column <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BmNnOnPv0N\">https:\/\/t.co\/BmNnOnPv0N<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Yasmin alibhai-brown (@y_alibhai) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/y_alibhai\/status\/923928899616169984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 27, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is a government whip &#8211; he\u2019s not just an MP &#8211; and his job is to keep people in line for the government\u201d,\u00a0Mr Brooks declared to <em>Chronicle Live.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, a spokesperson for Downing Street replied:\u201c The letter was written by Mr Heaton-Harris in his capacity as an MP, not as a government whip.\u00a0The Prime Minister has always been very clear about the freedom of universities and the role they play in creating and stimulating debate,\u201d he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/news\/north-east-news\/tory-mps-brexit-letter-north-13805416\">concluded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnson commented: \u201cIt was more of an academic enquiry rather than an attempt to constrain the freedom that academics rightly have\u201d, on BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme.<\/p>\n<p>But he added: \u201cI think a letter that could have been misinterpreted should probably not have been sent in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The request for disclosure of information is additionally controversial and it is likely to raise further criticisms as the Government has failed to publish data estimating UK&#8217;s economic future after the withdrawal from the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the Tory government found itself\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-41825345\">under pressures from anti-Brexit MPs<\/a>\u00a0to release the study, which reveals the potential impact of Brexit on 58 UK economic sectors, for weeks.<\/p>\n<p>On 2nd November, the Labour MPs appealed to the Commons to rule on the matter.
