It is thought that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org.uk\/about_us\/news\/new-diabetes-prevalence-figures-for-england\">90%<\/a> of diabetics have type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/11\/diabetes-tweet.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18557\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/11\/diabetes-tweet.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"956\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Type 2 Diabetes<\/strong>: &#8216;&#8230;occurs when the body doesn&#8217;t produce enough insulin to function properly, or the body&#8217;s cells don&#8217;t react to insulin. This means glucose stays in the blood and isn&#8217;t used as fuel for energy.\u00a0Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity.&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes\/\">-nhs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A poor diet (consuming a lot of fast foods, processed foods, trans fats, saturated fats and sugars) <em>can<\/em> lead to type 2 diabetes, as fat around the abdomen can affect the insulin responsive cells and potentially reduce their sensitivity to the insulin that the body produces.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetes.co.uk\/diabetes-and-obesity.html\">diabetes.co.uk<\/a>, obesity is in fact believed to &#8216;account for 80-85% of the risk of developing type 2 diabetes&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms of type 2 diabetes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extreme thirst<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Itchy genitals<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Cuts or wounds healing slowly<\/li>\n<li>Blurred vision<\/li>\n<li>Urinating more than usual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to prevent type 2 diabetes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Eat a healthy, balanced diet &#8211; e.g. high fibre and low in fat foods<\/li>\n<li>Stop smoking<\/li>\n<li>Exercise regularly<\/li>\n<li>Consume alcohol in moderation<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a healthy weight<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential consequences of type 2 diabetes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vision loss<\/li>\n<li>Kidney failure<\/li>\n<li>Lower limb amputation<\/li>\n<li>Cardiovascular disease (e.g. stroke)<\/li>\n<li>Sexual dysfunction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diabetics are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes\/\">five times<\/a> more likely to suffer from a stroke than non-diabetics.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1 in 10 people with diabetes get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes\/complications\/\">foot ulcer.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diabetes is the most common cause of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes\/\">blindness<\/a> in people of working age.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is thought that over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetes.co.uk\/diabetes-prevalence.html\">half a million<\/a> people living in the UK, are unaware that they have diabetes.
