{"id":20642,"date":"2017-12-06T14:00:51","date_gmt":"2017-12-06T14:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=20642"},"modified":"2017-12-06T14:00:51","modified_gmt":"2017-12-06T14:00:51","slug":"times-person-of-the-year-the-silence-breakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/times-person-of-the-year-the-silence-breakers\/","title":{"rendered":"TIME&#8217;s Person of the Year: &#8216;the Silence Breakers&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The winner of the magazine&#8217;s 91st Person of the Year award was announced on Wednesday morning.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/time-person-of-the-year-2017-silence-breakers\/\">&#8216;The Silence Breakers&#8217;<\/a> are the voices that have spoken out against sexual harassment and contributed to the launch and success of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Me_Too_(hashtag)\">#MeToo<\/a> movement.<\/p>\n<p>TIME Editor Edward Felsenthal spoke of &#8216;the Silence Breakers&#8217; creating &#8216;the fastest moving social change in decades&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>He said, &#8216;It began by individual acts of courage by hundreds of women, and some men too.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The magazines cover image features\u00a0Ashley Judd, one of the first to publicly shame Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein and Taylor Swift,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2017\/aug\/14\/taylor-swift-groping-lawsuit-no-means-no\">who sued former-DJ\u00a0David Mueller for grabbing her bottom.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Judd and Swift are photographed alongside Isabel Pascual, a strawberry picker from Mexico, Adama Iwu &#8211; an American lobbyist, and Susan Fowler, an ex-Uber engineer whose allegations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/6\/21\/15846014\/uber-kalanick-resignation-fowler-blog-post\">overthrew the company&#8217;s CEO.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BcXwcrTFTNq\/?hl=en&#038;taken-by=time<\/p>\n<p><em>Tanara Burke, who created the Me Too initiative before it took Twitter by storm in 2017.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tweeters have commended the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SilenceBreakers?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SilenceBreakers<\/a>\u00a0for equality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-06-at-9.43.43-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-20672\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-06-at-9.43.43-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"562\" height=\"103\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many were quick to spot an arm at the bottom of TIME&#8217;s cover image.<\/p>\n<p>The arm belongs to a female hospital worker who feared going public would be a threat to her livelihood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-06-at-9.46.17-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-20674\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-06-at-9.46.17-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"88\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Others seemed to prefer the idea that the arm is a representation of anyone who has ever suffered as a result of sexual misconduct.
