Facebook utilised their \u2018auto-play\u2019 video feature, automatically enabled for all users with an opt-out hidden in the account settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;A lot of friends lost their jobs over this bullshit&quot; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gNqfxXswrx\">https:\/\/t.co\/gNqfxXswrx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; WIRED (@WIRED) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WIRED\/status\/1052721146083401728?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 18, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The auto-play feature allowed Facebook to deceive ad-buying agencies by logging someone flicking casually through the Facebook page on their phone with the feature automatically enabled, and if the video loaded and played for more than a few seconds a full view would be counted by Facebook\u2019s own metric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/craigcalcaterra\/status\/1052515745664573440<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The lenient parameters set by Facebook to account for a full video viewing, paired with the auto-play feature meant Facebook provided heavily inflated average viewership figures \u2013 with the accusers citing inflation metrics running from 150-900%, a significant jump from the 60-80% admitted inflation error.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/district-courts\/california\/candce\/4:2016cv06232\/304645\/94\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lawsuit levelled against the world\u2019s largest social network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has updated claims that Facebook knew as early as 2015 that the figures being reported to partners and advertisers were inflated, and made no effort to correct the figures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facebook alleged that part of their Facebook Analytics listed as \u2018Average Duration of Video Viewed\u2019 was \u201cTotal time spent watching a video divided by the total number of people who have played the video\u201d, but was calculated as \u201cTotal time spent watching a video divided by the number of people who have viewed a video <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for three or more seconds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yet more allegations regarding Facebook&#39;s opaque advertising system. Regulators such as the CMA should consider investigating the operation of the advertising market on social media platforms such as Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lYHad6MlOZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/lYHad6MlOZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Damian Collins (@DamianCollins) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DamianCollins\/status\/1052839217792016384?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 18, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Damian Collins, Chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Committee, called for an investigation from the UK\u2019s competition watchdog hours after the claims were published.
