With some of the biggest stars in the world getting behind campaigns, charities and hashtags all in support of people who suffer from mental health issues, it begs the question: why are so many still suffering?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The mental wellbeing of artists in the music industry has been an unavoidable issue in recent months, with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/music\/news\/demi-lovato-rehab-overdose-1202893428\/\">Demi Lovato<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2018\/10\/11\/selena-gomez-hospitalized-a-timeline-of-her-health-struggles\/\">Selena Gomez<\/a> both allegedly spending time in rehabilitation centres recently for reasons related to their mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrTedros?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DrTedros<\/a> and I believe that we can all be <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Someone2Turn2?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Someone2Turn2<\/a> and help build communities that understand, respect, and prioritize mental wellness. Statistics: University of Westminster music industry think tank, MusicTank.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The stereotype of the \u2018struggling artist\u2019 is proven to be somewhat based in truth, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster.ac.uk\/news-and-events\/news\/2016\/can-music-make-you-sick-new-research-from-the-university-of-westminster-finds-musicians-are-three-times-more-likely-to-suffer-illness\">study<\/a> carried out by the University of Westminster found that 71.1% of people working in the music industry have experienced panic or anxiety attacks. Most participants attributed their mental health problems to poor working conditions, anti-social working hours, exhaustion and inability to plan their time\/future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a problem restricted to UK musicians, but a worldwide one. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iq-mag.net\/2017\/02\/mental-health-serious-concern-australian-biz\/#.W8m9cC2ZMU5\">study<\/a> from the Sonn of Australia University showed that s<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">uicide attempts for australian entertainment industry workers are more than double that of the general population and t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he levels of moderate to severe anxiety symptoms are ten times higher than in the general population.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23241\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23241\" class=\"wp-image-23241 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-22-at-23.08.14-1024x746.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"539\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic: Christian Onions. Statistics: help musicians.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mental health struggles within the entertainment industry are not limited to newspaper headlines, but are more regularly portrayed on screen in popular film and TV.
