Imagine if you could feel that every time you walked into your room. When you come back from a long day of university or work, all you want to do is release stress and relax.

If you want to cool down, you need the perfect atmosphere in your room. These are the simple ways you can bring a lingering sense of zen as soon as you walk through the door.

1. Light small candles

Image courtesy of Lars Nissen via Pixabay.

Candles produce natural light which is soothing to the eyes, especially if you have been staring at screens all day long. Scented candles could potentially cause cancer, so non-scented candles are best if you want to relax your senses.

2. No candles? Use dimming lamps

Image courtesy of Kristina Boneva via Flickr.

Some student accommodations do not allow candles because of safety but worry not! Lava lamps or dimming lamps can create an equally comfortable atmosphere in your room whenever you need to relax. Fairy lights are a great option as well.

3. Play calming music

Sounds like rain, the waves of the ocean or even the bustle of a coffee shop in the background can soothe the mind and soul. There are many videos on YouTube that will play these sounds for you, from 30 minutes to 12 hours. You can also listen to music, like compositions with soft and mellow sounds. If you don’t know where to begin, you can search ‘relaxation music’ on YouTube and choose whatever options suit you best.

4. Declutter

Illustration courtesy Elisa Riva via Pixabay.

A messy and cluttered room represents a messy and cluttered mind. Organise and throw away what you don’t need. Put all of your items into sections so that you can decide whether you really need them or not. Make your bed, clear your desk and open a window to let some fresh air in. Just decluttering will refresh your space and your mind.

Words: Shruti Tangirala | Subbing: Taylor Paatalo

Have you ever walked into a spa and instantly felt your nerves calm?
