{"id":23722,"date":"2018-10-28T12:06:08","date_gmt":"2018-10-28T12:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=23722"},"modified":"2018-10-28T12:06:08","modified_gmt":"2018-10-28T12:06:08","slug":"inflawhat-mince-will-become-50-more-expensive-if-no-deal-brexit-becomes-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/inflawhat-mince-will-become-50-more-expensive-if-no-deal-brexit-becomes-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Inflawhat? &#8211; Mince will become 50% more expensive if no-deal Brexit becomes reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The British meat industry has recently warned Theresa May\u2019s government that mince costs might go up 50% if the UK leaves Europe without a deal next March. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nick Allen, CEO of the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) told\u00a0 exclusively to The Voice of London that the government has to work out a Brexit deal that excludes the reinstatement of import and export tariffs with the EU. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New tariffs and a raise in price will result in a sales drop for all types of meat, including beef mince.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to figures acquired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/oct\/25\/no-deal-brexit-could-raise-price-of-mince-by-50-meat-industry-says\">The Guardian<\/a>\u00a0, mince is the most consumed in the UK out of all beef products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Currently, 35% of beef<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0arrives mostly from European Union member states with Ireland counting for 68% of the total.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beef burgers will take a big hit, as Mr Allen explained they are mostly made up of a mixture of British and Irish bits. Since most companies are Irish owned, they could make the importation in the United Kingdom more expensive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to the consistent Irish contribution to the British market, Nick\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allen believes it is &#8220;fundamental to avoid any Brexit deal that involves bringing back a hard border with Northern Ireland.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BMPA is currently attending multiple meeting and \u201clobbying\u201d the government and MPs to make sure the United Kingdom leaves the European Union with a deal that will not penalise consumers and businesses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Right now, minced beef prices in supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury&#8217;s vary from a minimum of \u00a3 1.49 to over \u00a35 for 400\/500 g, but that might change very soon and not all consumers will be able to take the hit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Words: Benedetta Laterza | Subbing: Salvi Shahlaie<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The British meat industry has recently warned Theresa May\u2019s government that mince costs might go up 50% if the UK leaves Europe without a deal next March.
