The lowest peak was registered in 1964 (1.64) and 1977 (1.69)\u00a0with the latest figures being very similar to the one in 1977.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Researchers found that the current rate is about 1.7 children on a sample of a thousand women with only 0.35% being under 25 years old. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The rest of the European Union does not seem to score better with Cyprus scoring the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lowest result with a 1.0 rate and France, Ireland and Sweden reaching the peak of 1.8. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other countries that are poorly performing include Italy, Portugal and Poland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Right now, no European country qualifies for the minimum limit of 2.1 that is necessary to create a full generational turnover in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25454\" style=\"width: 734px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25454\" class=\"wp-image-25454\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/11\/eu-fertility-rates-2017-.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"532\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graph: Benedetta Laterza<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If numbers keep declining, serious action will have to be taken to ensure that the ageing of the population compared to births does not create a gap in the social services guaranteed by the welfare state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This includes a full reform of the retirement system with a raise of the minimum age requirement, pension reforms and investments on disease prevention and of course, immigrants whose children will one day become citizens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sweden is one of the leaders in promoting natality through 16 months\u2019 parental leave accessible to both mothers and fathers, public IVF treatments and very affordable healthcare. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recently in Italy\u2019s current budget draft, a controversial proposition <\/span>offers a piece of cultivable land for 20 years to all couples who plan on having a third child.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Forget nurseries and labour market reforms: agricultural land will solve all <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/fertility?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#fertility<\/a> problems in Italy! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5A4pddoPWF\">https:\/\/t.co\/5A4pddoPWF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Marina Della Giusta, EconProf@Unito, European (@mardelgiu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mardelgiu\/status\/1058813285707988997?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u2013 as defined by all opposition parties \u2013 \u201cout of time\u201d manoeuvre is set to cost \u20ac20 million and has not been taken with much joy by the general public who defined it as a \u201cmiddle age looking\u201d policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Words: Benedetta Laterza | Subbing: Mohammed Hamid<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Millennials will be remembered in the future as the \u201cless is less\u201d generation: less alcohol, less sex and less children.
